My Best Friend's Love-Chapter 10

Chapter 10: Confrontation
My phone rang as I logged out.
"Hello?" I said.
"Hey, Riley," Ashley whispered.
"I'll talk. You listen," I said as I ran out the front door of the police station. "Just listen, all right?"
"Okay," she said softly. "I'll listen."
"We met online on the chatango site. You came to the hospital when I was stabbed by someone. I'll explain who it was to you later. You gave me blood for my transfusion. You went home after we kissed and you went to get your laptop, so that you could stay with me at the hospital, you know, while I healed. That's when Julie Cohen's men attacked you. And let me tell you, I had this vision after or maybe before it happened, and I saw what the two of them did to you."
"How?" She asked quietly.
"I think I got it from my grandmother. She had visions whenever someone important to her was in danger."
"I'm important to you?" She asked in a hushed whisper.
"Very. Now, go outside. I'll be there in two minutes," I promised her.
"Okay," she murmured.
"I'm flooring it right now. Are you outside?"
"I'm afraid he'll hear me. Can't I just wait until you get here?"
"No, baby, please," I said gently. "Just open the door. You said you wanted me to say I'm your man. Well, honey, I'm saying it now. I'm your man, and you need to trust me. Tell me, Ashley. Do you trust me?"
"Yes," she answered quietly. "I'm opening to door now."
I waited patiently, praying that Brit wouldn't wake up before she got out. Then I heard a voice in the background. Damn! He must have woken up.
"Where the hell are you going at this time of night?" Brit asked her.
"Out for some fresh air," she replied, and I was speeding now as I rushed to her house.
I parked, and jumped out of my car. I ran to her door as the line was disconnected. It was shut. I knocked, but no one answered.
"Ashley," I called, but it wasn't her voice that came through the door.
It was his.
"Go away, Riley," he said in a menacing tone.
Then came Ashley's terrified voice.
"Do it, Riley. He has a gun," she said, scared.
I went into business mode immediately.
"Brit, let her go. She doesn't want to be with you anymore."
I stepped to the side of the door, just as a bullet came through it. I thought he might try that.
"I'm still here, Brit Little. I want you to let her go," I said calmly.
"Like hell I will," he said angrily. "Leave, Riley. Or she dies."
"Fine," I snapped.
"Get off me, Brit!" Ashley screamed.
That did it for me. I kicked the door open, and the sight that came to my eyes almost made my heart stop. Brit was laying on top of her, and the gun was in her mouth.
"Take one more step and I'll blow her head off," Brit said hatefully.
Ashley was smiling, like she knew something he did not know. I had a vision, then. I saw Ashley, and she was emptying the bullets out of his gun, and flushing them down the toilet. The vision fades, and I smile, too.
"You said you loved me," Ashley whispered as she fought to push him off of her.
"I do, but if you want him, then you're dead to me," he said in irritation.
"Then kill me, Brit. If I can't be with Riley, I don't want to live."
"Fine, *****," he said. "Have it your way."
He pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. Brit pulled it again. That is when I jumped him, handcuffs in hands. I wrestled him to the floor, and took the gun from him. I cuffed Brit.
"You have the right to remain silent," I said, calmly. "Everything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to have an attorney. If you can't afford one, one will be appointed to you."
"You're a cop?" Brit asked incredulously.
"Yes," I answered hatefully, my anger flaring. "And I'll see to it that you are taken into custody and charged with attempted murder."
I left Brit on his stomach and helped Ashley into her wheelchair.
"Can you get my laptop?" Ashley asked me. "It's in my room."
"Sure," I replied.
I walked past her pink couch and went down the hall. After checking the first door on the right and discovering that it's the bathroom, I walk into the second room.
Her bedroom is a pink-filled dream. The walls, bedspread, and even the carpet is some shade of pink. The laptop is on her bed. I pick it up and take it to Ashley. She smiles at me.
"You want to come to the police station?" I asked her.
"Yes," she replied happily.
"I wish you two luck," Brit said bitterly.
"Thanks," Ashley and I said in unison.
"Whatever," he muttered, and we laughed. "Just take me away."
"With pleasure," I told him, then to Ashley I said, "Let me get him in the cruiser, and I'll be back to get you."
" 'kay," she said sweetly.
I helped Brit to his feet and walked him outside. He didn't say anything. I put him in the back of the cruiser, shut the door, then walked back into Ashley's apartment.
"Can you get some of my clothes?" She asked me. "There's a duffle bag in my closet."
"Sure," I told her.
I went to her bedroom and got her bag and filled it with clothes from her dresser. I placed the bag over my shoulder and returned to Ashley.
"You going to be staying at my place from now on?" I asked her.
"Yes," she answered softly. "So, you were my boyfriend and you just let him take me?" She asked me gently.
"What was I supposed to do? You didn't remember who I was," I said in a defensive tone.
"I still don't remember," she pointed out.
"After we kiss, I'm sure you will remember."
She giggled, and that made me smile.
I helped Ashley into the passenger seat of the cruiser. After the door is shut, I put her wheelchair in the trunk. I put her bag in the back seat beside Brit. I got in and drove to the police station.
Brit was booked and after Ashley and I gave a statement, he was taken away.
Ashley fell asleep before I got her back into my car. She woke up on the way to my house.
"Hey," she said sleepily.
"We're almost home," I told her.
"Do you have any catheters?" She asked me.
"Yeah," I replied. "I brought some from my grandmother's house when I first found out you might be paralyzed. Plus, I saw a commercial for catheters that we can get so you don't have to reuse them. I wrote the number down and put it by the phone in the living room."
"That's good," she commented.
"I also have a bedpan for you," I informed her.
"That's good, too. How much longer 'til we get there?" She asked me.
"About three minutes," I answered.
"Where am I to sleep?" She asked curiously.
"I was going to let you have my bed because I have one of those couches that turns into a bed. That way I can keep an eye on the front door. I want to make sure you are safe from harm, Ashley."
"You are so sweet, Riley," she told me.
"Well, after all you've been through, I want to make sure you never hurt, or want for anything ever again," I told her solemnly.
"I trust that you will keep me safe, Riley," she said warmly.
"We're here," I told her.
"Do you have any icecream?" She asked me. "I'm craving something sweet."
"I'll make you and me a bowl as soon as we get inside," I promised her.
I was so happy, now that Ashley was in my care, I forgot all about Brit. Ashley was with me now, and I know I'll never let her go.
