Effexor Seems To Have Stopped Working.

A personal story in the experience: I Battle Depression
I've been feeling rather "off" for the last few days, all day long.  My medication doesn't seem to be working very well.  I feel like I did during the first few weeks of starting effexor...I can't really describe it well...just a strange heady feeling...and maybe a little anxious.  If I keep busy I don't seem to notice, but as soon as I stop to have a rest or go to bed, the odd feeling returns.  Keep busy??  Yes, but not all day and all night.

It's been about 4 months since I begun taking 150mg effexor and, until now, it has work really well.  Does this happen to others?  Could it be the change in temperature?  - it has been very hot over the past few days.

Wish I could take all the credit, HS, but I think the 38C, humid weather has something to do with it...

Lil, I don't trust doctors around here. But I'm definitely going to be talking to my Psych Nurse/counsellor next week. I hate the thought of having to increase my dosage or worst still changing drugs. I'm hoping it's all just in my imagination...

SD- good point. I tend to forget and am often 1 - 2 hours out from my normal dosage time. I hope it works!

HS - Hmmm , could be allergic to Roj you think? May have to restrict all physical contact with him and only communicate through EP...funny, but there are days when we actually speak more to each other through EP even though we are under the same roof!

Oh Roj, you are way hotter than 38C...ouch

Gawd, so embarrassing. I went to take my medication this morning and noticed that yesterday's was still there! No wonder I was feeling so terrible yesterday. But it still doesn't account for the days before. Anyway, I hope this improve...now that I've actually taken it!

Lil, it sounds like there's a doctor shortage everywhere - city and country alike. We have a good doctor in our town but she doesn't have a good mental health record (with her patients), and to top it all off she's a good friend and thinks she can fix me without drugs. Her idea of a depression fix is to invite me over to dinner every so often! Great.

I was on Effexor once and the side effects were so bad they actually did a thyroid scan on me. I was hot and shaky with a rapid heartbeat all the time. I figured out for myself it was the Effexor. If you've been on it four months and are tolerating it well, maybe it's something else. It's NO fun when they start changing and playing around with meds. Are you able to sleep okay? Make sure you keep detailed notes on your symptoms for your doctor. Good luck and I hope you're feeling better soon.

Hello Myo. You're back! It's lovely to see you here again! I think my biggest problem is remembering to take my medication. I'm terribly forgetful at the best of times but seem to be worse since taking effexor. Hopefully I'll back to normal tommorrow. See you around.

Guides:How To Battle Depression

Check out this group's How To Battle Depression guide, where people with this experience share their best tips!

Here's a tip or two...
  • There are misconceptions about depression. Most people that deal with depression cannot "snap" out of it. Depression is painful and shreds away any sense of normalcy the person may have.
  • This doesn't work when severely depressed (can't do it) but after recovering from the most serious phase of the last episode I took to heart my therapist's advice to "go to meetings (I'm in AA), exercise, and CREATE STRUCTURE". Very good advice.
  • I sought help because I want to help my friends who are depressed. I can't help them if I don't help myself first. My advice would be to think of your loved ones. Be at your 100% so you can provide for them.
