Biological Or Not

In my culture, close friends of your parents would be addressed as Aunt or Uncle.  It would be rude and disrespectful to call them by their first names or by calling them by their last names...such as Mrs. Smith. So growing up, there were a lot of people that I called Aunt and Uncle who were not blood related to me.  They were such a big part of my family's life that it only seemed fitting.  I have friends that I have known since 5th grade and on that I grew up with that are part of my family.  I have friends who have loved, nurtured and cared for me as if I was their very own sister that I consider them my family.

If you took a picture of all of the people in my life that I consider "my family", we would look like the rainbow coalition.  We may not be related by blood but we are bound by the love in our hearts.  For this I feel very blessed.

BTW, both my parents grew up in big families.  My biological aunts and uncles and cousins are all pretty awesome too!  I just wish we were able to have more opportunities to get together.
