If you run through the drake equation,  you'll get vastly varying numbers, but You'll inevitably end up with a minimum of one, a maximum of many.

Then if you tack on the number of galaxies onto the end of that, then you'll have to agree the chances that we are the only life in the universe is so close to nil that it doesn't even really matter

So true! Even if you factor in the variables Drake didn't take into account such as the need for a large Jupiter like planet as shield against incoming debree, that still leaves a minimum possibility of thousands just in the milky way! How incredibly arrogant it is to think we are alone in such a vast sea of the unknown :)
