Plastics

This will be my only attempt to reach out to people on EP to garner support to save the environment.

There were 4 other subtopics that I posted and then deleted due to lack of interest.

A sad commentary on the apathetic state of the world today.

I leave this one up only because of the number of comments it has received.

Plastics, the bane of modren capitalistic society in America.

It has been found that plastics do NOT biodegrade in the least.

What plastics do is break up into ever smaller pieces and do so all the way down to a subatomic level.

So the bad news is that as we allow our world to unravel from the top down now we face it unraveling from the bottom up as well.

Imagine plactics at a subatomic level interferring with electrons neutrons and protons.......... Can you say "Disassemble the world as we know it?

We have to find ways to reduce this plague... starting with everyone religiously using canvas shopping bags. There are 7 in my household... I try to always use them.

Stop with the bottled water and sodas and lets get back to glass bottles and or cans.

To do this we need to let the grocery stores know we want a ceasation of the plastic bags.

You want bottled water?

Get it from a service that delivers 5 gallon jugs and a cooler if you need it.

The bottle is reused over and over again.

We can do this..............Please spread the word and recommend this to your circles

Thanks

PLB

Hi amildman,
Many years ago a Detroit auto company killed the first electric car.
How advanced would we have been if ecologically ba<x>sed solutions had been continued instead of bought out by huge corporations then killed.
I am not sure at this point there is time left to affect the paradigm.
I personally am disgusted with the entire situation.

It's all well and good to talk about this but until we resolve it in a UNITED effort we are doing nothing more than just having a coffee clatch. Ted K. blocked the installation of Windmills off the coast of mass... The envirnomentalist blocked the building of windfarms in ND.. then again the solar farms in Az or Mx because of a few turtles and a lizard. This eco/green fight that is benefiting a few (Gore and Co.) is blocking every effort we're making to keep our country clean and pushing us towards Petro dependancy.. So how do we change the pardigham? ( I cannot spell for beans).. Amm

So true Bitterdregs
It's all about lawsuits these days.......I grew up to be an adult despite the dangerous milk bottles the milkman brought........City parks lost a lot of cool rides...... Whirley-gigs... see saws and a very large spinning disk with handles you ran to spin it and then jump on.......... lost to lawsuits............ sad

I wish there was a way to convince milk and soda companies to go back to glass. The products were not only more ecofriendly but tatsted better as well. I rmember milk delivery, and you'd give them the empty bottles back to be reused. But even if they were'nt given back they were biodegradable. Oh but the yuppies will scream about glass not being safe for kids. ya know what ? I lived. My parents made it. Their parents before them. All this childproof plastic crap dumbs down our children and teaches them they don't have to be careful. No responsibility.

Thank you for your comments Vendatta and your support.

Wysteria and Little lena Glass has it's own demons in the processing stage however glass though not really something that biodegrades in the conventional way will always break down to smaller and smaller particles. The good news is that glass is endlessly recyclable.

Little Lena a stainless sreel bottle is reusable and there is no need to toss it. It's life time use is extended almost indefinately and it can be sterilized.

Wysteria you may want to take a little time to learn the are of glass blowing... a good teacher will be able to guide you in recycling into useful items.... I applaud your forward thinking...
Good Work!!!!

I get that, I'm just stating a fact. I get that you have to crawl before you walk, and you must slow down before you can stop, I'm just essentially agreeing with the name of this group.

Vendetta the whole idea here is not to win the war but to buy a little time until the world's governments actually get past talking the issue to death and really get serious about saving our planet.
This is not my only story for things that can be done to help the environment.
Read them all and do a little towards the goal of each and time will be bought.
The war can not be won completely until mankind as a whole renounces greed and the culture of planned obsolesence that has created our disposable society mindset

Hi Elf,
I have a water purifyer - filtration machine I think you would call it. Volcanic rock, UV light, that type of combination. I have also switched to glass for the health products I manufacture on the side business. It just looks SO much better! Habibi and I are looking at ways of re-cycling glass now, since he has SO MUCH excess glass lying around. So I wondered, how does glass biodegrade? hmmm.. you got me thinking. *smiles

Yes, it would be nice if everyone did small things, and it would have a huge impact... but in the end, the little things aren't going to matter. Reduce reuse recycle is nice, but it only slows us a tiny bit, it doesn't change the fact that we're still tumbling down the slope, approaching the cliff. No one wants to admit the unpleasant and obvious truth, that our society as it is currently set up is completely unsustainable and hence, it is only a matter of time before it collapses.

Thanks for the comment and committment LV.....If everyone did small things it would make a huge impact

I have reduced the use of plastics, small change but if we all do it, maybe we can make a change

Thank you camael.
I have no children of my own but I believe we as a species have no right to behave this badly.
The number of species extinct or endangered because of our wreckless disregard is staggering.

Tomorrow, April 22nd is EARTH DAY... Please plant a tree in honor of Mother Earth.

Thank you xiaomei... I am happy to see you care too

that is awesome girlflower!!!!!!!!!!! Why would organic flowers have 1/2 the vase life?
I understand the expense to some degree.

Note to readers: Girlfolwer just keyed us into the right of return... talk to your florist or just order from girlflower ;-D
Also if you are buying fake flowers do it in silk or other materials not in plastic.

every little bit helps... as a florist i offer "organic flowers" but they are more expensive and have half the vase life.

I reuse products and encourage my clients to bring back aquatubes/plastic or paper and i will reuse them..

good point Kwall I plan to pot garden most of my garden this year and I have found that I get a better yiels on many of the veggies with little or no weeding.
Our garden is never sprayed with any poisons.
I don't farm a huge acerage so I know that presents its own problems... maybe you could explain this to the readers a little further. It would be appreciated.

Thank you my princess for showing how Europe is so far ahead of us as an ecological citizen.
Americans need to wake up and to join the green movement.

I agree with you ravenlee however we need to stop the plastic more than the trees which are typically from tree farms and are renewable... but if you read further I really recommend the canvas bags over all other forms
Thanks for your concern and your comment... smiles

what about saving trees? 30k bags or so from a tree (?!), poor trees. newspaper must be recycled & never thrown in the garbage, newspaper takes weeks upon weeks to disintegrate.

I would like to sincerely thank all of you for commenting on this story.
I was feeling like I was screaming in the dark.
You have renewed my spirit today..... Once again, Thank you all.

smiles

sub atomic destruction someone will do that as a movie soon watch!!!

I was just hoping if you were stoned to drag you into the MATRIX so to speak......... :-PPPP

Wow, drama queen much? C'mon PLB, stop being part of the problem, whiny-whinington! (LOL) YOU have much experience to share to newbies and others who just haven't thought of, say, LEDs for Xmas lites!

Gotta get and stay positive about this stuff. Republicans have been ignoring and downplaying the ecology long enough. OUR TURN! Here we go! It is getting better already.

It's the plastics destroying our world that is causing the glitch. It has gotten into the internet and will soon find it's way into all our homes. We will disappear from existence......... I told you we have little time.... Subatomic particles are being scattered as we speak... smiles

is there a glitch here, stuff is repeated.

PLB- that reduce/reuse...line was my signature line from personal email, and a good thought, but not a link or address.

Little time to give Qaz.......... I have hope but can wear thin.
Hope you feel better

The produce and shopping bags in our grocery store are now cellulose made from corn and biodegrade in 30 days in a landfill. We reuse those till shredded.

I have about 2 dozen canvas bags and have used them for everything, including moving, since 1990 NYC Earth Day.

Please repost any and all info/stories/blogs pertaining to the environment and ecology. Reduce/reuse/recycle/repurpose/refuel/repower/restore America!

It does not matter whether anyone leaves a comment or it gets many views right away. Leave it up for people to peruse whenever they get to it. More interest will be generated among newbies to the movement. Your experiences are valuable.

And though plastics are made from petro chemicals and other nasties, what is out there is getting repurposed and reused into lumber for indestructable building and furniture as well as other uses. Even glass is being remelted into tiles, etc. It is hopeful and growing, though far slower than it should be happening.

We're all awakening from a Bush induced prozac stupor over the last 8 years. Give it time. We're 6 years from the tipping point and 2* from that melting edge. We just turned into the Aquarian Age so it will improve exponentially.

Thank you IT.......... my you have a lovely avatar today....... but no where near as lovely as you... smiles

still paper........sorry but you can get about 30,000 or more bags out of a tree and paper degrades to nothing in a few years.... Plastic can destroy the basic building blocks that hold our reality together.
Interruption at a subatomic level... donate the paper bags and explain why the change then put your canvas bags in your car and you will slowly remember to take them in with you......... smiles

qazrazl I put that in search and it came up with nothing

I pray you are correct

BRAVO tasmin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will not use plastic bags anymore

Glad to meet you........... I would like to add you to my circle as one environmentalist to another.......
Sounds like a wonderful place but way too cold ... smiles

It's good to be your self ;) ...
Saskatchewan, Canada ... nice place ...

Thank you gottaBhappy.
I was me 40 years ago on the 1st EarthDay.... smiles.
I am happy you have gotten rid of plastic bags there still much more to do. may I ask where you are from?

My provincial government has banned the use of plastic bags in all of their concerns since the new year, finally going green. I am a Water Sciences Technologist over 20 years ago. You want to talk about being the lone voice in the wilderness? You're me twenty years ago :) All you can do is what you're trying ...

The only way this is going to work is if you spread the word and pressure the stores to stop the plastic party.
Wer all need to work on the local level and when called upon to speak out to the congress and senate.

I applaud you all!!!!! A filtration system is an economical way to remove the bottles and to stop the fuels used to transport them. Soft drinks in cans and recycling or lose weight by cutting way back on those.
A journey begins with a single step.
Compounded by all of us we can make a tremendous difference in our world

better to re-use than recycle if possible too

NOT USING in the first place is the one and only sure way.
Please see my "Bad News" story in the I Recycle" experience. Ironically, due to the economic situation, less recycling is being done.

Is there any means to consolidate the several experiences on this topic?
(do a E.P.search for "recycle")
United we stand!

How true are your words. However, recycling your plastics goes a long way to reuse of the material so that more does have to be made and less is poured into landfills and that the reused plastic uses less energy in being molded once again. So I encourage all that yo have said (I have my canvas bags int the car so that if I make a stop I am ready), but as mewold points out, take the little steps that help as well!

Absolutely!
I carry a plethora of reusable bage in the trunk of my car, and 2 that fold ecomonically into my very small purse. The real trick here is remembering to pull them out fast enough to beat the clerk who seems to be on a mission to use as many of those dastardly plastic bags as he/she can divide the purchases into!
Several of the stores here give a 5 cent credit for each bag a customer provides. My favorite, Aldi, has very attractive prices, no frills, and bags only if you purchase them.
In most places tap water is as good or better than bottled. Do you really know where it has come from? It's easy to refill a bottle at home (if you aren't afraid of the toxic rumors ) or there are stainless steel reusables, now.
So fie on Mr. Robinson!

So many people think that the problems are so big and complex that there is nothing we can do about it in our lives. But you show that there are things that we can do as individuals that can help tip the scales back our way.

thank you for trying to do the right thing. if everyone was like you we would be ok!
