You are correct. Automatics are boring. I learned how to drive in my dad's '64 ford F-100 with 3 on the tree. Your 442 has a 4-speed. That's all you need. My girlfriend has a BMW with a 6-speed. 2 gears too many.
i have had a bit of everything all fixed by me, i put what i want in them and i know what i got , nope no rice burner for this texan, and yes all had four speeds, a necessity of male life and some ladies know how to use them and i don't mean the lipstick although i don't mind a lipstick mark here or there ,hehe
sweet, i love some hot rod cars. Really cool when you see a lady behind the wheel of a fast car. I let me wife drive my truck ONCE, she scared the heck out of both of us.
i knew someone that had the same 442 but it was an automatic. It was a nice car though. What color is yours? i am assuming you have the big engine in it?
I learned on a manual transmission and drove them for many years. Three in the tree was the normal manual transmission back in the mid to late 60's. I converted an old Mercury Comet, 66 I think was the year to a Hurst floor shifter. I loved how easy it was to shift compared to a column shifter. The best part about a manual shifter is that you can shift to the sound of the engine. I beat a lot of more powerful cars that had automatic transmissions with a standard shifter because you can use the full RPM's when you shift. Automatics don't allow that. Mind you now that I am much older I have switched to a manualmatic transmission. I currently own a 2011 VW Jetta TDI with a 6 speed manualmatic. I was surprised at how much torc this engine has as it is only a 2 ltr diesel with a turbo charger and rated at 140 HP. It has great bottom end power and it will burn rubber on take off. It also has a locking differential to prevent spinning on takeoff. I could add much more but back in the 60's automatics really sucked as far as power goes. I owned a 58 chev with a 2 speed powerglide transmission connected to a 6 cylinder. This combination really sucked.
Okay never heard of the Automatic Transmission being called a slushbox before but that is very interesting. I learned to drive in a 69 Chevy van three speed manual transmission it wasn't a speedster but it had lots of torque.
I learned how to drive on a manual transmission, and feel that anyone who has mastered that, to have the right to say that they know how to drive. As for your choice of cars, I love your choices, especially the Shelby Mustang Cobra.
I worked a LOT of overtime and did some serious moon lighting to buy that Cobra. I got it a year old with less than 10k miles on it. One of the Docs I work with couldn't handle it and sold it to me for less than blue book.
I think it had a lot to with he drove it once in the rain and almost wet his pants. That And the day he bought I told him I wanted it when he was ready for a new car. And I'm a damn good nurse, so he likes me lol.
