Ep Feedback "virtual Brainstorm" --"BLOGS" Section

Chuggin' away... I think that could be our theme here.  We are working hard at a variety of things... and one of them is the true "red headed" child of EP -- Blogs.  This is the odded section of the site in the sense that the people who love it... well, LOVE IT and use it regularly / daily... and then others don't use it at all.

So my first questions divide this way:

1. Do you use blogs?  If so, why do you use them?  What do you like about them?

2. If you don't use blogs, why don't you use them?  Is there anything that would make you want to use them?

Now, with those first questions out of the way... I would turn to some other key specifics:

3. How can EP improve the blogging experience for you?

4. How can EP make blogging better / easier for you?

5. How can EP improve reading other people's blogs for you?

6. What is missing from EP blogs?

OK... so those are the questions and they are some pretty meaty ones, I know.  I would love for you to share your comments here so that we can all engage together around our shared ideas.

Before I go, I will add one idea:

What do you think of revising blogs and transforming them into something called "Journals" or "Diaries" and not only would this be your space for your more "stream of consciousness" / daily thoughts writing (called journaling back when we were in English class ;) )... but it would also be a place for you to outline and manage your goals and keep track of your overall self -- not just your thoughts, but your development and accomplishments.  This would be a new place where the story of "you," just you, lives in your journal... would that be something interesting to both you guys who use blogs every day and those of you who never use them?

We are very open to other ideas... so don't keep quiet on this one.

Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

EPJake

I seldom use blogs because I don't think many people read them, their too tucked away and out of site and too in depth for the casual web surfer who is first and foremost looking for something to catch their eye. Or information on a certain topic. Perhaps a person might find an informative or entertaining blog but usually through search engine link on a topic they are searching for.

It's a lot of writing to risk having it go unread by anyone.

Of much greater concern at EP is the ad that pops up in the middle of browsing the site asking me for money. Remember EP is a FREE site and no way should it be asking for money at any time what so ever. To misrepresent a product is fraud. What do you suppose people think of you when they see things like that? The first thing I think is I am looking at the product of a criminal mentality.

I have not used the Blog pages as yet myself, but looking at it, it looks simple and easy to understand and use for anyone wanting to write a Blog. And making any changes to this section might not be an improvement as its ok as it is at the moment. For me too use this section I would need a good and interesting topic which I have not got. To answer your Question whats missing from blogs is me. :-)

The main problem with the blogs section is that it is fairly invisible. Unless I make a point of checking whether a friend has added anything to, or even has, a blog, it never makes it into my consciousness – unlike stories, for instance.

I am a very intermittent blogger. In part, that may be because I have kept an old fashioned, hand written diary nearly all my life and tend to put all my most private thoughts, there. I write about EP people there, too, one in particular. None of this would go happily into an EP blog, that others could read. If only I read it, why not just carry on with what I am doing?!

ok, so what ideas epjake

I never wondered before, actually why don't I use blogs? I know my time constraints allow me to do so much, Im always doing somethign...and so i post stories when I can, pm, message a lot to friends who talk to me ...or just say hi, and...wondered if anyone reads the blogs much, but then again, yes, I have only so much time. I think, its possibly, (not sure) a mental thing with me..hehe..not that Im mental, but Id love the blog changed to diaries, or journals...id love that...because for some odd reason, I have one, here at home, and just keeping it up, with a few lines per day is fun, so maybe name it journals, or diaries the mind is an interesting fascinating thing, and sometimes, just one word evokes something and inspires one to write...Im not kidding..so I say change the name from blog, to Journals or Diaries, that fires me up for some reason maybe it will do the same for others!

1. I use blogs for private & public use the material is mostly; quotes I admit I should blog some out, musical reviews or lyrics, yes I cannot create videos, but a suggestion draws a wider audience any congratulatory goodwill days for all the public.

We should be able to have a separate section for journal & public entries. At the moment it is very disorganised.

The change is more impt. than the name. Hope it proves useful.

I use blogs, to write my feelings usually in poems. Blogging is pretty neat, and I actually get to reflect my inner feelings with my close friends here on ep. I like the name blog instead of diary or journal, I mean, that is what blogs are for.

EPJake, I would like my comments on other people's blogs treated like my comments on other people's stories--I would like them accessible on the Stories Commented On page I have bookmarked. Not having it this way means once those comments go off your Recent Activity page they sort of fall into a black hole for your own sake. And I would like to be able to subscribe to subsequent comments on a blog entry the way you do with a story.

Is there not anyway possible that I could link my blog from www.blogger.com to this blog service? My blog url is: leenaramore.blogger.com .

After viewing others comments I wonder why not Journals and Blogs - as separate options?

Hi Jake

Please see my responses below.

1. Do you use blogs? If so, why do you use them? What do you like about them?

I rarely use blogs but from time to time am interested in the blogs of others. I find them insightful when well written. I read a couple of mine form a few years ago and was embarrassed by them in my current space !!

2. If you don't use blogs, why don't you use them? Is there anything that would make you want to use them? Um, I'm not sure why I don't use them now. Maybe because there are so many social medias around now like facebook, twitter etc. I do like my questions being answered though.

Now, with those first questions out of the way... I would turn to some other key specifics:

3. How can EP improve the blogging experience for you?

Maybe blog of the week and random blog.

4. How can EP make blogging better / easier for you?

Maybe have a word limit on blogs and I won't read really long blogs as I lose interest and have limited computer time.

5. How can EP improve reading other people's blogs for you?

as above, maybe limit

6. What is missing from EP blogs?

Can't really answer the question. Not sure anything is missing but maybe more promotion of blogs.

1- yes, not as much as i used to... it's a great way to get info out there... actually, if the stories had vid posting capabilities when i joined i might not ever used it either... i put most of the content out there for that very reason...

2- N/A

3. How can EP improve the blogging experience for you?

i know it's a bit much but if we could add a background, like in myspace... not sure how u'd go about that...

4. How can EP make blogging better / easier for you?

kill the technical difficulties

5. How can EP improve reading other people's blogs for you?

don't read other blogs...

6. What is missing from EP blogs?

nothing i can think of... not a big blogger myself...

*** What do you think of revising blogs and transforming them into something called "Journals" or "Diaries" -

i'm sure there are some who will jump right into that but for me it's a bit much... i've put enough of my life out there already...

I have used a blog. But it is my private only. It is used for saving documents, stories I have read and keep my thoughts as memory of AGES

I think EP blog page is ok..but if we can post some pictures there, it will be great

1/ I like to post blogs occasionally - am not particularly interested in sharing a journal as such, but it can be a good way of giving friends more info - I love to share items of interest and give support to others - I love to view others blogs - it helps me get to know them - I'm disapointed when someone hasn't posted any and wonder what we can do to inspire them to share/ have confidence etc.

2/ Would like newcomers to be given ideas re what sort of things others post on blogs as well as diary info - some obviously don't investigate as much as I have, I can tell by comments.

3/ I don't find navigation difficult but many may not bother to scroll down a profile far enough to reach the blog entry.

4/ Suggest collecting tips/hints on blogging and accessing together with a blog entry heading. Could be a section for anything we type in together with stories, comments and technical tips for those less computer literate, a video section on how to do etc

5/ Blog access higher up in profile

6/ A confidence boost and more encouragement for those who think they cannot post anything

Please don't rename blogs - it works!

Personally hate the idea of journals or diaries and love the flexibility of blogs.

Thanks for asking!

one thing that would imporve blogs greatly for viewrs is letting them know BEFORE they click on it is this an ALL video blog

as a user of dial up internet it gets so frustrating to see the title of a cool sounding blog only to find its some song somone saw on you tube or some video they posted from there that i can't view anyway because it takes too long and i don't want to because that does not interest me

1. Do you use blogs? If so, why do you use them? What do you like about them?

Yes, I use the blogs here on EP...sometimes what I have going on to write about or express just won't fit into one or two experiences. Or sometimes I just need to ramble about something to get it all straight in my own head. Honestly I like the blogs just the way they are.

Now, with those first questions out of the way... I would turn to some other key specifics:

3. How can EP improve the blogging experience for you?

4. How can EP make blogging better / easier for you?

5. How can EP improve reading other people's blogs for you?

6. What is missing from EP blogs?

I really like the blogs the way they are. I know you mentioned in your story something about being able to track my progress and accomplishments, but to be totally honest sometimes things are not about progress. Sometimes I just write because I need to vent, not because I want to start a new self-help project. Does that make sense? I hope so... lol

1. Do you use blogs? If so, why do you use them? What do you like about them?

A) Yes, I use them to bring important information and I like that they are HTML so members can click a link, rather than having to copy/paste.

2. If you don't use blogs, why don't you use them? Is there anything that would make you want to use them?

A) N/A

Now, with those first questions out of the way... I would turn to some other key specifics:

3. How can EP improve the blogging experience for you?

4. How can EP make blogging better / easier for you?

A) 3 & 4 I think they're fine except that sometimes the writing floats over into the advertisements in the right column leaving the blog hard or impossible to read.

5. How can EP improve reading other people's blogs for you?

A) I think the blog on a members page should be closer to the top of their page allowing it to be noticed by other members, and possible a different color emblem.

6. What is missing from EP blogs?

A) Writing in them...;~))

Hi Jake, BLOGS are OK I guess, sometimes I start one and then never seem to have time to continue adding to it. That's not your fault; I have started BLOGS at other sites too, never to continue them.

I do not blog....my time is limited on line and i spend it making comments and answering questions.

No offense intended to those who do blog but I also never thought I was self important enough to believe anyone would want to follow a blog I would write.........Sorry EP....I just don't have that large of an ego

To be perfectly honest, I don't blog more because I forget it's available to me. That and my life is freakin' boring anyway lol So I don't have a lot of input on here, other than maybe make Blogs more noticeable

Posted by Scoobs57 on Mar 30th, 2010 at 12:55PM Has the right idea and to go with that an unlimited number of pages would be nice. I found I could only do like 4 stories only. I would have done more but it seemed as if there were no more room or something.

I noticed that others seemed to be unlimited. As far as changing the name is fine, a blog/anything else you want to call it is still a blog even if no one else knows that is what it is.

I am sure you will announce what you plan to do overall. I'm all ears.

1. Do you use blogs? If so, why do you use them? What do you like about them? I don't use the blogs on EP, There is nothing about them I like or dislike.

2. If you don't use blogs, why don't you use them? Is there anything that would make you want to use them? I don't use them because I don't see the need for one. No there is nothing that would make me want to use the blogs.

3. How can EP improve the blogging experience for you? They can't.

4. How can EP make blogging better / easier for you? They can't

5. How can EP improve reading other people's blogs for you? I don't read other peoples blogs.

6. What is missing from EP blogs? No idea?

And Journal is a nice idea over blog.

I dont use blogs but would love to have a diary section set up

I can't help you with this one..I don't blog, but I did want to say that I like what you have done with the place so far. Keep up the good work.

1. Do you use blogs? If so, why do you use them? What do you like about them?

I use them for my own thoughts, even though no one comments them. I feel like they're a forgotten part of EP, like the Dream Meanings section, which I look at constantly, and am probably the only one of few who do so. What do I like about the blogs? They're blogs. Normal blogs. I am content with them.

(only had time to answer one, LOL)

I have used these blogs!, for private use only! why!? i don't know, well, yes i do, it's because this, is a big site and you don't know who's looking in sadly!!,. . But i found i am not getting enough "feedback" from anyone,. On another site where i am a member that's all they answer too, are the blogs, i find on that site, it is no good posting anything ie; interests ideas on the forums, because not many people look at the forums they all seem to read the "blogs" there,. :-(

1. Do you use blogs? If so, why do you use them? What do you like about them?

Friend-only stories, to share music (once upon a time because I couldn't embed videos in stories - that's changed - but I still like being able to hyperlink in them), I like the flexibility and the selected audience if required

3. How can EP improve the blogging experience for you?

The blogs used to be really slow to load - but I think that's fixed? It can be difficult to find new comments, a view similar to the stories comments view would be good, a similar earliest/latest sort on the comments would be nice

4. How can EP make blogging better / easier for you?

see 3

5. How can EP improve reading other people's blogs for you?

nothing I can think of now

6. What is missing from EP blogs?

not much?

What do you think of revising blogs and transforming them into something called "Journals" or "Diaries" and

Well at the moment I think the understanding of blogs is pretty general and they don't need to be renamed

blogs: Yeah. I use blogs. I posted videos. Now, that E.P. can post videos in stories so I will post video in the stories.

So I guess I don't need to use blogs.

Maybe it is just me but I don't get e-mails after I leave a commit at someones blog...DD

1. I use blogs, but not every day. I write in my blog when I've had one or more experiences that I can't really fit into a group. I do use it a bit like a journal and write about everyday occurrences.

3, 5, 6. I think our blogs should be more customizable, since they are our personal journals. Give us the ability to give our entire blog page a custom background color or image, more font options, etc. Kind of like MySpace. If you're unable to do that, you could at least give us some custom "skins" to chose from.

On your last point, I do like your ideas for new features, but I'd prefer to keep calling them blogs instead of journals.
