My Parents Are Getting Old, Fast.

A personal story in the experience: I Care For My Elderly Parents
H i, my name is Kim, I am 33 years old and a Registered Nurse working in an ICU. I never thought I would be taking care of my parents this soon! I feel like I am too young to be taking care of them.  I have three teenage sons who have been going through the hormonal changes that every boy goes through. They are more than a handfull, and now there's my parents. They are still living on their own, but I just sent my mother to the hospital tonight. She has COPD, CHF and a long list of other things. On the phone she sounded like she was drowning in her own lungs. But it took all day of convincing her before she would go. They're admiting her into the hospital tonight and I feel like I'm at my wits end. Everything is just too much. My husband is supportive and helps me hold everything together. He says we all have to work together to get through things. I would never consider leaving my parents alone, even though my two older brothers have.

I guess I have come here for a little friendly support and a reminder of what life is all about.

Finally read your post. I lost the web site when my grandson played on the computer! 15 years ago, I was helping care for my dad after Mom died. He lived 1 1/2 hours from here. I'd work 10 -12 hour days and then go see him. It was tough. He had cancer, and had just lost Mom to cancer. He didn't care any more. My daughter helped all she could. My brother and sister didn't even call him. And now my son helps take care of me. Well, his wife does! I rent a room from them, so the money helps them. They help me with laundry and other things that are hard for me to do. I take care of my grandson--not too hard, he's 12. It's working better than I thought it would. We each are able to maintain some privacy, so that helps.

Good luck with your parents.

Hang in there Kim. My heart goes out to you. Getting parents to listen to and do what's good for them is very difficult and could try the patience of a saint. Stick to your guns, do what you can to preserve your own sanity and enjoy your own family as much as possible. The lesson that took me the longest to learn is this; You cannot control the people in your life, you can only control how you react to them. It's a valuable lesson that I have to reteach myself everyday. Good luck and I hope your mom is feeling better.
