I'm Very Selective

The thing is, the written word is SO much more powerful than the spoken word.

It's a lot more dangerous too.

When we say things, we have the ability to read people's body language and that tends to keep us in check. But on a website, there is no such feedback.

If someone writes something inflammatory, I may leave it. In fact, I love the discourse that comes from inflammatory statements.

But, there's a time and a place.

If I write a tongue in cheek story and someone decides to grandstand in the comment thread and make is less fun, then I will delete. Even if it's someone I care about. I suppose, in some cases, I might actually be more inclined to delete a comment written by someone I care about.

I think long and hard about deleting. But I'll do it when I see that it's necessary.

OUCH. Someone just deleted a story that had a comment I wrote that I thought was pretty good.<br />

I suppose I should reconsider what it's like to be on the other side of a delete.
