For a Variety of Reasons

A lot of phrases that are overrused, are used to reinforce stereotypes, and do not enable people to put much creativity into their vocabulary.  The same phrases are repeated over and over to the extent that their words becoming meaningless.

Today my detested phrase is

"The Irish are the salt of the Earth"

Why are they?  We are as complex a nationality as any other, but due to stereotypes we are seen as down to earth, simple, and embracing, that we are plain, and we are whatever else the sexy connotation of salt denotes!
