I wrote this story a few years ago. I was so proud of my Grandad when he gave up smoking. My Grandad has not smoked for over 6 years now, sadly yesterday 1st June 2012, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and is currently in the hospital.

I am glad that you don't smoke. I wish all people would decide to not smoke

I had 2 Grandparents who were serious chain smokers and they both died of cancer from the smoking. Man they really were into it. They both started early in life like say 12 years old and smoked their whole lives pretty much. And they smoked non filtered strong cigarettes like Chesterfield and Pal-Mal and that stuff. Man it was bad. Their whole house smelled like an ash tray. it was nasty and they both died of it.

Me I have never been "A smoker" but a few times in life when I was going through a lot of stress I would have a few cigarettes but never was a regular smoker and I am pretty much done with it forever at this point.

Smoking sucks. Those cigarette companies are nasty. They just want to get people addicted to that stuff and get rich off you while your addiction slowly destroys your health.

    Major edit due to tl;dr:

While I may love smoking, I really hate those who use peer pressure to try to get people to start smoking. You're clearly a strong person to stand up for yourself, and make your own decisions, rather than letting others make them for you.

Well, I smoke, but I see where you're coming from. Be glad you're not a slave to those cigarettes! I started as a teen. I grew up with an addict dad, and had a very rocky adolescence. I drank and did drugs too. I have managed to kick everything but the cigarettes, so I am proud of myself even though judgmental people give me dirty looks when I light up (even though I try to get as far away from them as possible.)

Sounds kinda similar to my childhood = Only real difference is that my parents are crazy, not druggies... And I actually like being a slave to my cigs, oddly enough.
Check my confessions if you're at all interested about my childhood =3

Honestly, when I went to high school, smoking wasn't considered cool by anyone anymore. I first tried smoking out of curiosity. After that, my parents found out and I had to promise never to do it again. A few years later, after graduation, I picked it up again. I continue to smoke because I like the taste. I like the moment it creates. Smoking is especially good after sex, or while drinking. For me, it really is one of the small things in life I enjoy.

I do, however, try not to smoke too much. A pack usually lasts me 10-14 days, so I guess I'm still in the safe zone.

I never understood the prejudice against smokers. I will never bother you with my smoking, so why would you bother me about what I do to MY body?

good for you man. I was the same way as you..but i started smoking at age 20, and it was by peer pressure. and lemme tell you. Don't give in! I was so energetic before i started smoking..i was on the wrestling team and the football team back in high school, and took boxing. and did many other sports...thats till i got into smoking and pretty much took my health at this point. been smoking for 2 years now and its a pain in the *** not having the energy to do anything. saying you will quit but never do. and trying to back in boxing but getting winded out easily. ..and i before i started smoking. i never understoof why people did it..or how they say they cant quit..then i told myself " if i do it, it would be eays to quit" LOL. nope..im still trying to quit. longest i went for was 2 weeks. damn!

smoking would be a deal-breaker for me in a relationship. I am turned off by smoking and would never involve myself in a relationship with a smoker since I wouldn't be comfortable around it...I sometimes wonder since my social life is struggling if smoking would better it but I am not comfortable whenever I pass an area around the smell...so glad I am living in a world where smoking indoors is prohibited in most public places

I have never smoked, and never will. Those who started to smoke, that I know are trying to quit. Someone thought I smoked and asked to bum a cigarette. They saw the vial boxes of insulin in my shirt pocket as I was going to the drug store to refill the prescription. She refused to try this brand. My story about this is posted here.

It's expensive, it stinks, it looks dumb and it's very bad for your body so why bother smoking?

I don't know of any benefits that come from smoking.

Personally, I don't see the appeal with smoking. Some teenagers at my school smoke casually, but all that smoking does to you is turn your teeth yellow, make you smell bad, and causes health problems in the future.

Cigarettes are delicious. Find the brand and taste that's to your liking and smoke away. Light up. Inhale deeply. Do it again! It calms you down. Dissipates the pressure, the tension. As they said in World War II battle smoke breaks, "smoke 'em if you got 'em!" The Germans knew where we were because they could smell Virginia tobacco, different from what they smoked. Smoking is a great hobby. And patriotic! Smoking will make Obamacare a fiscal possibility! If you don't smoke, you'll live too long, and mess up all the government's health care plans. So go to an Indian reservation and buy a carton! Maybe two! Every weekend! Like the sergeant said as the boys went over the top in World War One, "do you want to live forever?"

I'm one of those people who has not smoked to look cool but because I like the nicotine rush. I very rarely smoke however (I don't think I could do this all the time).

But saying that it's good that you've never even tried.

My mom smokes in secret, even though she pretends she quit about 5 years ago. It's sad. No one else in our family smokes. I don't want to, no matter how tempted I am sometimes. When I was a kid I used to love inhaling my mom's second-hand smoke. She would always shoo me away but I would get a whiff. I didn't know until later how terrible smoking is. Never have I put a cigarette to my mouth. I don't plan to.

I never saw a reason to start smoking. I hate the smell and I couldn't be any more disgusted by people who do it.

    To each their own!

Everyone has their vices and many of them are not healthy. In fact as some people say that cigarettes kill, many things kill.

There's a lot of thing I don't like but I don't go around making a big deal out of it.

I don't smoke either, never have, never will. It kills people, for god's sake, and haven't we enough to contend with without going looking for trouble.

I lost my best friend and brother in law from smoking about two years ago. I've lived with all kinds of smokers around me all my life. Thinking any level of smoking is harmless is not only rationalizing it but dismissing the effect it has on others. One might be lucky enough to have genes resistant to cancer and emphysema but they have no idea of how susceptible the person right next to them is. I tried it as a kid and found it disgusting. That being said, it's legal so it's someone's legal right to do it. It's also my legal right not to which means someone forcing it on me through their careless, selfish behavior is violating my rights.

Smoke if you want to but if you do, at least respect the rights of others and keep it away from them.

Angel3 offers words of encouragement to those who want to quit without judging those who don't. It seems those who don't are on here seeking to justify their behavior to her instead of applauding her resistance to peer pressure and her Grandfather's choice to quit.

To you Angel3, I say good for you. Never give in and I wish your Grandfather a long and healthier life.

''I started smoking because it was cool, but I continue to smoke because its not."

    what a word.

so you continue because you get addicted to it, right?

there's nothing cool about getting addicted to dangerous stuff.

It does feel good, when you feel free of something that you've depend/relied on for so long. I've had my fair share and I don't want it anymore...

I quit smoking recently but I can't stand going to nightclubs and late night bars where there is no smoking. I want my nightlife filled with smokiness, dark lighting and mysterious characters..... I don't miss smoking except after sex. That one marlboro red lit up jus after you've had sex on a Monday afternoon when you're supposed to be at work...... ahhhhhhhh the small things in life......

I started smoking because I wanted to know what it was like, I honestly continue smoking because it relaxes me when I'm stressed or angry; and it's a good way to connect with different people socially. I know that there are other ways to be social, but this is one of my ways.
