I got stuck trying to do transformations of some categorical data in order to convert the skewed distributions of the variables into normal distributions.  The problem was with entering the right commands in the 'Compute' command area in order to convert the skewed distributions into normal distributions.

For example, in SPSS, I know that when I want to square the results of a variable in an attempt to transform its distribution, I can issue this Command in the 'Compute' section:    (Variable) **2 .

So how can I transform the results of variables using the following transformation methods, where 'Y' represents the data of the variable that I need to transform:

1. Y cube

2. The square root of Y

3. The negative reciprocal of Y = -1/Y

4. The negative reciprocal of Y squared = -1/YSquared

5. The positive reciprocal of Y = +1/Y

6. The positive reciprocal of Y squared = +1/YSquared

when using computation, do you use the mouse or the syntax commands?
