La Tristesse, I agree with what you say.

When people say "oh yes of course, everyone hates war, but, you know, sometimes its necessary" - I question your *commitment* to preventing or stopping war. Because, guess what, the reasons to go to war always seem to apply to *YOUR* government's war, don't they? So really, your opposing war has no actual effect on your own actions, it is only used to oppose other people's agression, and so you become a hypocrit.

Yes, most people would fight and if necessary kill to actually save the life of their family. Yet this question is really little more than a rhetorical device for justifying other aggression: very few people die in war as a result of directly threatening their killer's families, or even the killer themselves. Modern warfare compromises of many types of attacks on unsuspecting targets, which usually also involves civilian loss of life, people who posed not even a theoretical threat to their attacker.

And finally no, I would not "die for my country". Countries have risen and fallen throughout history, they can be strong or weak, good or bad, depending on their populace. People, nature and love are what matter.

I never said anything about the troops. Thats a whole other can of worms Im not going to open.
I oppose war. I didnt say anything about self defense. Thats also a whole other story. In the context of land and holy books there is no reason to take life.
I do not hold anything against soldiers. I cannot comprehend why they would join the armed forces, but thats just my personal belief. Its not something I would ever do, not out of cowardice, but because I couldnt reconcile that role with my personal beliefs.

I get tired of my criticisms of our ridiculous former leaders (like Bush and Rumsfeld) being twisted into attacks on the soldiers. Those are two completely different things.

My sister in law went to Iraq as an army journalist, and she came back very damaged psychologically from what she saw. I don't hate the troops, I hate the politicians hiding behind the troops that they send into battle. They attack the 'patriotism' of candidates that want to end this horrible war.

It ****** me off.

I agree with you 100% whuttup12 :)

thank you Whattup :)

A criticism of war isn't a criticism of soldiers. Soldiers follow orders and act bravely, but they do not decide when war is declared or where the fighting will occur.
It is completely possible to oppose war and support the troops. It is not their fault for the situation they find themselves in.

so you are saying latrisse that if you and your family were encroached upon by an aggrressor that you would not kill this person to save your family ....
your ignorant words are offensive to those who oppose the agrressor and give their own lives to save your stupid arse

thank you very much, but people who disrespect us is enough to make me want to choke them out, and I'm an incredibly calm and collected person. to me, disrespect is totally intolerable...

And I admire you greatly DreamDemon for being one of the men who are brave enough to defend our country. Someone has to do it sadly. No one likes the war but unfortunately I don't see world peace in the near future. You're a strong man. Thank you for everything you do. Best wishes! :) You're an awesome guy

but would you spit on those who protect you with their lives? that is the real question. you may hate war as much as any of us, but some of us feel the need to defend our country, whether we like war or not we lay our lives on the line for all our citizens at the ultimate cost for an individual; his/her life...

Self defense.

especially not land, pride or Holy Books.
lfe is life. nothing else equates to it. nothing else is worth as much, nothing is as sacred or precious. nothing. no one elses life either. the life of a Western soldier is worth no more than the life of a soldier in the Middle East. The life of a child worth no more than that of a middle aged man.

Life is life and we should never, ever touch it.
