my ex- was a vegetarian, almost vegan. she would occasionally and enthusiastically suggest i try one of the many meat substitutes she ate, claiming they tasted just like meat. (after being a vegetarian for over 20 years, how would she know?) some of them were quite good; none of them tasted anything like meat.

I don't mind meat substitutes, for that very reason. :)

Yes, vegetarian substitutes are the only kind of food where "you can barely tell what it is!" is used as a selling point...

It's just the texture you don't like? Are you alright with mince?

You are missing out. Lamb is some good eating. Where I live it's too expensive to eat on a regular basis.

It just looked sooooo good. *sigh*

I tried a lot of different meats again last year just to make sure. Sadly I still can't stomach them. :(

Poor thing. On the upside, there are some delicious vegetarian stuff out there. Our family only eats meat a couple of times a week. American's usually eat way too much mean and it's not good for them.

Do you eat a lot of mushrooms? If so, your eating better that the majority of us. They are good for immunity. I have a friend that is HIV positive and he eats them with every meal. Due to that, he's remained healthy and sickness free.

It's been proven that many of those that have cancer that go to vegan diets and all organic, end up either cancer free or the cancer stops spreading. So, you are likely to stay healthier than the majority meat eaters.

to be fair, Nigella could make roasted burlap and stale wool look tasty.

It does seem that all the intriguing dishes contain meat .. seems to add such richness and variety. I do eat meat myself, although I was vegetarian for ten years ... and still enjoy vegetarian cookery very much ... in fact I'll most likely go back to it one of these days. I think cooking without meat does require a little more inventiveness to make it interesting ... but it can be done ... it just requires effort which can sometimes be a bit of a pain. I know what you mean about watching all the yumminess on cookery programmes though, they make it look so sumptuous and effortless!

I'm lucky that I'm a good cook. I can open spartan cupboards & find the ingredients for a feast. But I do still wish I could stomach meat. Life would indeed be easier. :)
