How Did I Survive The Military....?

I was captain of a nuclear submarine and since I hated people telling me what to do I refused to tell my crew what to do. After some initial anxiety, it took off like wildfire and now 10 years later it's proven to be even more powerful with highly disproportionate numbers of promotions from that group.

Telling people what to do comes from a long history of "take control, attract followers" leadership model. That evolved for humans during a time when physical work was our primary output. 

Now intellectual work is our primary output. We need "give control, create leaders" leadership. It's the opposite.
