A Major Negative In My Life

I am a transsexual woman and my religious upbringing was the single most negative influence in my life.  The preamble of religion SHOULD be, "First, do no harm.", but that isn't the case.  I know that there are some caring and compassionate people in religion but I think they are caring and compassionate independant of their religion. 
My life would have been a lot easier if I had not been raised to believe that god considers me an abomination.  Imagine telling a child that god thinks they are an abomination.  I always knew I wanted to be female, there was never a time that I didn't but I was raised as a fundamentalist Southern Baptist.  It takes years to rid yourself of that crap.

Thank you for writing. I am against religion too and you're right, it does "take years to rid yourself of that crap". It's been 11 years that I've suffered from my religion and only now am I beginning to see the light.

I've only lived two years in the Bible Belt, but I have felt the sting of the Southern Baptists (I do not even attend church!). My heart goes out to you for being tortured most of your life due to a rule book written by superstitous Bronze-Age middle eastern high priests. I hope that you have found peace in being who you are.

I never felt that from knowing and understanding God. Yes, some people have expressed those opinions. I know God loves me the way I am after all he/she made me the way I am.<br />

How do you know what other people think? Can you read minds and if you could, would you be able to avoid deceit?

So you say he loves you, right? What about children dying of hunger and disease?

Have you ever thought what happens to a child who was not baptized? Suppose it's family died, as happens to so many children in the third world an there is no one to care. The message is clear: the sons pay for the crimes of their ancestors and worse yet, that child is not cured from original sin.

That means the next stop after death is hell. The crime that child committed was having been born.

And somehow you're more important, you're a favourite of the creator of the universe, of good and of evil. Which he clearly enjoys causing.

Stating how I feel about religion based on personal experience and extrapolating on the consequences of religious beliefs and teachings usually brings replies that are missing the point. <br />
I'm not the last transgendered person born on this planet and christianity continues to see itself as the "experts" on how we should live our lives, view ourselves. The bible still contains <br />

This negates christianity having any specal understanding of the human condition and in my opinion is the primary reason for our social status. I'm just stating that the king has no clothes.

If I were to need to accept the existence of a God I know that she would never put her wisdom in to the words of humans. My sacred scriptures are written on the leaves of trees and my cats and I read them together. And they say that transsexuals lile me are her gift to the soul of humanity.<br />
I am sorry about the scars but now it is time to celebrate yourself.

I think that your parents or your social surrounding made you feel like that,not religion itself.God won't consider you as abomination.There is no such thing.

When it is actually written in the bible (Deuteronomy 22:5) and as a child your world is centered in fundamentalist christianity, it's pretty damaging. That god is too small for me.

Wow you just made me very sad. I hate to think that your scumbag parents made you feel that way. It's not right. By the way it says in the bible we are all god's children. So, you are not a abomination. I do not believe in God or any doctrine. I live my life taking the positive things from all religions. Get away from those negative people and go live your life. Otherwise you will always live in a pity party. Oh by the way I have never seen you but I think you are beautiful.

I am not religious but I am a Christian. None of us are an abomination in God's eye.The person inside is what He sees, not the shell we leave behind .
