Though Not Many People Seem to Enjoy This

A personal story in the experience: I Enjoy Talking Deeply With People
I don't want to sound like a snob, but it does seem to be only fairly intelligent people who want to connect in this way.  Too many people seem to want to just oggle the box or net.

that doesn't sound snobby to me. it sounds like quite a good observation. however, people who aren't that intelligent may find it harder to hold a deep conversation but it doesn't mean they don't enjoy them. trust me. i think it might just be that more intelligent people can think of more to talk deeply about, or can explore ideas more deeply.

i find that i get along better with people much older than me simply because i find their conversation more interesting and often goes much deeper because they have more life experience.

I think people who enjoy reading and writing will also tend to enjoy conversing, and have the attention span and depth of thought and imagination to be able to sustain it. TV just doesn't seem to bring out the same in people :)

yes, i agree, but i think that conversation has developed a lot over the years, in the Victorian times people would talk in great depths about simply nothing at all, but they enjoyed using language and enjoyed the words they used to express themselves.
now we wish to talk in depth about subjects that matter to us with the same exploration of language and also the ability to extend our personally knowledge.
i know that when i am talking to people i try to use as much of the language i know as possible to express myself. i am always wanting to learn new words too, as my drama teacher said "without the words with which to express ourselves, we simply cannot".
television doesnt bring out the same for people, it has been designed so that people dont have to concentrate for extended periods of time. personally i prefer watching programs like planet earth and the likes. i'm not saying i dont like a bit of mindless comedy every now and then though.

Yes RazzSeven, if you check my blog, I think one of the first things I said about EP went along similar lines ("souls huddled together" or something like that if I remember correctly).

To use a common metaphor, ForeverAutumn, TV's like "fast-food" information a lot of the time, I think, maybe of some use sometimes, but not entirely healthy as one's staple diet. I think the medium can be put to good use for documentaries, and of course there are some really well-written TV programmes, I just prefer to buy them on DVD if I can.

I wonder if you've read 1984? Interesting views there about restriction of vocabulary and consequent effects on thinking. In fact it's one of my favourite novels and highly recommended if you've not got around to it yet!

thats quite a nice way to put it. huddled. like for comfort from the unforgivable colds of the world. sorry, it made me think of penguins.

yes documentaries i like a lot. but other shows i ... do not like. to put it euphemistically. personally i am incapable of setting out a specific time to watch tv. i cant do it. something will crop up that i will want to, or need to, do.

i have read 1984, part of my drama work. it had very good themes that were explored, but it wasn't written particularly well. the Chinese language was, at one point cut down to have the same effect as seen in 1984, i think i read it at a "terra cotta warriors" exhibition in london. it was to stop them rebeling, and was to stop them feeling repressed, because they wudnt know wot it was. i think this is why so many Chinese writers prefer to write in english, it has a lot more ability to allow you to express yourself.

You didn't like the way 1984 was written? I found it highly immersive myself; immensely engaging and truly frightening! I didn't know the Chinese had used that approach with language. Have you heard of neuro-linguistic programming? (NLP?) Part of that (kind of applied psychology) involves very careful use of language to affect thinking.

yea they did. i definitely read it somewhere reliable.

yea it wasnt very subtle and didnt use very good technique. didnt you find that? i didnt find the language itself terribly nice to read.

no i have never heard of that. is it the kind of thing that interrogators use?

I think with 1984 it was the richness of ideas that impressed me.

NLP involves looking carefully at communication, both in our internal dialogues and in our communication patterns with others, to try to influence behaviour in a positive way. Interesting and sometimes useful.

oh yea, i do that kind of thing a lot. it sounds complicated but its really not.
yes 1984 did have very good ideas and theories in it and that's how i managed to keep reading. have you ever read lord of the flies?
