I Eosinophilic Esophagitis
Hi all. I'm a 57 year young lady diagnosed with EE two weeks ago. I started with acid reflux years before but ignored it for a long time. I finally got medication to help that, but the damage to my esophagus had already been done. I noticed about 4 years ago that food or pills kept getting lodged in my throat. As time passed it was more frequent. Very
frustrating when you have to excuse yourself all the time and head for the bathroom until the particle passed. Very embarrassing as well. I became more anxious when we were out for dinner wondering when the next episode would crop up. My husband kept after me to go see my doctor and talk to her about the problem which I finally did. My doctor referred me to gastroenterologist. He sent me for several upper GI's to see why the
food was getting stuck. It was determined that my esophagus was narrowing. Creepy thought. He booked me for an upper endoscopy, which is when they put you out and send a small tube down with a camera down your throat to see what is happening. First time was pretty painful. He also said that my throat looked pretty angry and red. He suggested that I would need to have my throat dilated every 6 to 8 weeks until it was at a
circumference that would be more manageable for me to swallow food properly again. I've had the procedure done about 7 times now. I'm also on Previcd for my stomach. After the last one the doctor asked me to come to his office in a week which I did. That's when he gave me the diagnosis of EE. You see he could understand why my esophagus was
narrowing near the top of my stomach (acid reflux burn) but not in the region of my throat (upper esophagus). That sort of baffled him for a bit. He talked to a couple of his colleges and realized that I had EE. He put me on Flovent (puffer you spray to the back of the throat but don't inhale and swallow with a bit of water) twice a day. It has helped me immensely. I still have some work to do though. I realize that I have some allergies
to some certain foods and am in the process of trying to elimate them. I've found some websites that deal with EE and they have been very informative and immensely helpful. That's my story so far. I go back to the doctors in a couple of days to see what other things can be done to help. Thanks for listening.
