Never Ceases to Amaze Me

i went into walgreens to pick up somethings...at the checkout counter, the cashier looks at me (pauses) and askes "are you italian?" no i am not. "indian?" no...clearly he isnt going to give up so i tell him my ethnicity. His response? "wow you speak really great english for being an immigrant" my response: " i am american, i was born here." (shocker!) his reply: "oh....well, still...your english is stll great for having parents who are immigrants." my reply: "i am 4th generation...my grandfather fought inthe korean war." his reply: "oh..." What i really wanted to tell this guy was "hey, your english is supurb- especially since you are of african origin and had to have immigrated from some little village in some country on the african continent." but then i would be a racist biggot. what is an american anyway? last i checked the majority of the american population are decendents of immigrants. just because i have dark hair eyes and light olive skin i cant speak english? do people not realize that English is spoken and taught in other countries besides America, the UK and Australia? skin color does not change your citizenship, and suprisingly enough, "white" is not an origin. everyone came from somewhere and here is the big shocker... we are all citizens of the planet earth and we are all human, reguardless of complexion. why is this such a hard concept to grasp?

crazy

The guy probably just wanted to start conversation with you! Maybe you were being a little bit too defensive? What I have found is that in all *races* there are those individuals who will display racism or at the least, have racist views towards blacks; and that blacks aren't supposed to harbor or display any kind of negative attitude towards any other races because that is supposed to make them hypocrites; however, none of those individuals from other races who display racism towards blacks are seen as hypocritical despite the fact that they don't like it at all when people display a negative attitude towards them! So, either everyone is hypocritical or no one is, that with reference towards bigots in general and the racist who support their views.

I'm not racist but I have to agree with killthejill. England is having to change to conform to the politically correct where you just can't say anything without it being found offensive by someone. My niece is a nursery assistant and has been told she can't say Ba Ba black sheep any more unless she does one line of Ba ba white sheep also. It is ridiculous to say the least. There are far too many things considered "racist" and often no offence is meant at all. It is creating an us and them situation. We should all live together without trying to find criticism.

My Dad is Iranian, and when I used to go out with him as a child I'd hear idiots saying things like this all of the time. He came over here as a student many many years ago, yes he still has the accent however he speaks better English than most people and won't call himself Persian to conform to Iranian 'comforts'. Yet he's still taken the **** out of and patronized where ever he goes. It annoys me to hell and back.

i feel like black people are put on a pedestel and can say what they want. but all the other races have to carefully tip toe around hoping that they won't offend any black people.
