Birthday, 61

Yesterday was my birthday and I got up with a twinkle in my eye and a smile on my face. It is great to have reached 61, lived through good and bad times, loved and been loved. Expectations for the day looked great to me.

I received birthday greetings from two medical sites, who keep track of me. Didn't realize that they would be the only ones who would send greetings.

Then I went home from work. I started cleaning up my townhouse and waited. Waited to hear from children and grandchildren, waited to hear from my sister. I waited and waited and waited. Around 7:30, a telemarketer called. I was sure that it was family, but it wasn't. At 8:30, my son called to tell me that it is inconvenient for me to come visit this weekend, like we had planned and a "Oh, by the way, happy birthday, Mama." At 11 PM, I turned off the TV and went to bed. The younger son didn't call.

I know that I have many blessings. I have healthy, active, wonderful children and grandchildren. I am just alone.

What would have helped this? Should I have planned a day off, church, a shopping trip, a movie, etc. If I had done these things, I would have still been alone. Life without a family looks pretty bleak to me.
