I Find Psychology Interesting
I don't feel comfortable that I know the people or adding relevant information to the conversations. I have trouble starting conversations or keeping them going. I feel uncomfortable as to how I'm dressed versus what others are wearing. I'm uncomfortable with the way I look physically. If I could just lose a few more extra pounds I would feel more comfortable. Sound familiar??
Self-awareness is impacts everyone. Every meeting you attend, every social gathering among mixed groups of friends, coworkers and unknown individuals. Anywhere where you are out of your comfort zone you are impacted by self-awareness. More importantly self-awareness often leads to critical-awareness. This is why you feel uncomfortable and usually want to leave or become a wall flower at a social event. You have the feeling either consciously or subconsciously that others are aware of you.
Self-awareness is your mind focusing on traits and abilities that are uniquely you. Often your mind will focus on your inabilities. Why? Primal instincts to avoid perceived negative emotional situations! You seek to avoid situations that you have either no or little control over the outcome. Mentally you will rationalize the benefits of not going to the event as you wish to avoid your emotions. While you make the decision not to attend the event people never take into consideration the negative feelings associated by not going, namely cycles of depression.
Have you ever witnessed a sporting event where the player misses a critical chance to score a point? In this example I often quote a basketball player at the free-throw line. The player is aware of his/her abilities. Think too long and critical-awareness kicks in and the player misses the shot. The player suddenly becomes aware of their surroundings and the impact of them scoring that will have on the game. All eyes are on them! Your mind cannot effectively process two things at once. The mind will toggle back and forth between the mathematical calculations (left hemisphere of the brain) to make the shot or critical-awareness (right emotional side of the brain). Since primal instincts are involved your mind focuses on the later predominately. The player just missed the critical shot.
So how do you over come these two demons that seem to control your life? You need to have confidence in yourself with the understanding that you are not perfect. Good news is neither is anyone else! You might feel they are. Again that’s critical-awareness of your abilities versus the perceived abilities of the person. It’s a perception, not reality.
Certainly you have many unique experiences to add to any conversation. By discussing yourself you become more comfortable with whom you are. Besides the people that only talk businesses at social events do so because they lack the ability to have meaningful personal conversations, self awareness. Quite frankly most would welcome the opportunity to change the conversation but they often lack confidence. They lack confidence in speaking publicly about themselves and sharing personal information. They often do not find themselves intriguing enough or feel their stories are boring. All they have to talk about is work. Every great social event conversation that you can think of has always been personal!
Overtime your comfort zone moves from your sofa to any social event! Take care and good luck!
