I agree with you. Just because you are interested in the subject matter does not mean you are like them. I am also interested in Serial killers too. I have bought a few books on them and have watched documentaries as well like you.

For me its not being happy with what they did. Its being interested in what lead them to become that way... and if we can learn more about them then we can know how to stop that from happening in the lives of young people potentially and also to catch these people who are out there doing this.

There are some things that are pretty common traits amoung serial killers but its not an exact science for all of them. But a lot of them are loners. A lot of them have been abused sexually or other wise as a child. Many of them have a fascination with dead animals or torturing animals when they were kids.

Lot of them were bed wetters way past the normal range.

A lot of them have dabbled in the occult and a lot of them have an interest in ***********. Also a lot of them when they are adults seek to gain a position of power over people. Like a security guard or something like that

I think a lot of them its a power thing. They like the idea that they can have control over a persons life and take it if they want. Makes them feel powerful.

Some of them have an agenda where they go after certain types of victims.

maybe to get even with a particular type of person or sometimes I think they choose victims that are easy targets like Runaways and Prostitutes are usually targets of a lot of serial killers because they are easy to approach and when they kill one there is a long time before somebody finds out or notices that they are gone.

But Yes I think the subject is fascinating. Its very strange to me because there are so many things a person can devote their time too. Why they choose that is beyond me.

I think that for some of them what they do is an act of revenge. At somepoint during their lives they were hurt deeply so then they go off on this idea

    of getting revenge.

You should check out Hunting the Devil by Richard Laurie - a really good book about a big Russian serial killers and how he got caught but only after killing more than 55 people during 12 years. And also check out Richard Kuklinski on youtube - one of the smartest serial killers in my opinion

I don't think it's odd to be fascinated by serial killers. It's intriguing to try to figure out how their brains operate and how they see the world so differently than most.

I think childhood tramas have a lot to do with how they develop also. Most have had very disturbing childhoods.

I too have delved in to the fascinating life of serial killers. It is not weird at all to have this interest, it is merely human nature to be drawn towards and feel a need to question that which is so far beyond any normal comprehension. In many instances I have determined the same as the previous comment by hplovecraftfan. This being evidence of some kind of damage to the brain, causing abnormalities which in turn could have caused a lack of empathy, sexual deviance, etc..This was discovered in the case of the infamous Fred West. .In other cases, an unusual enlarged brain was discovered during autopsy. i remember reading a book about the infamous Jeffrey Dahmer, Thinking at the time that nothing in life could shock me or surprise me, after all I had by now seen and heard it all......or so i thought. Certain descriptions within that book as to what he did to his victims after death for his own sexual satisfaction, was not something I was prepared for. I had to put the book down and it was some time before I could face reading it again. This was stuff that even the most sick and warped of minds could not have imagined!! The other interesting point on the story of Dahmer was how insignificant and plain ordinary a man he appeared. Apparently it was his ability to behave so normal and so like able that he managed to evade capture for as long as he did. Analysis in to his past, his childhood, the searching for potential clues again yielded very little.info. Except the fact that he had developed an early interest in to the dissecting of small animals....... encouraged in the first instance by his father. He was deemed as sane and stood trial for his crimes. I never really understood how a man capable of such heinous acts could be found sane, insanity of some kind is a blatent factor here! this was in no way the work of a sane man! The truth is we still understand so little of the human brain, many of these theory's will remain a mystery for a long time yet.....

Being fascinated by serial killers is not odd, but getting your information on them by tv specials is not the best source. Biographies on serial killers.... Your best sources probably would be criminal justice texts.

Its cool you like writing horror stories and murder mysteries. I would love to read some.

Good to hear that you don't want to really hurt anyone... That's a sure sign of idiocy.

You mentioned you wanted to know how serial killers brains work. From my time as a criminal justice major I would say...Many serial killers suffered from head trauma at a young age... many tortured animals when they are young, also they frequently were involved in arson.

Either people love or they hate, and they must do so violently

I am interested in researching why people do what they do. Serial killers are a unique group because of their mindset. Sociopaths and psychpaths are very interesting to study. I can't imagine how someone cannot have empathy towards people or animals but serial killers are just like that. I wonder if it is both environmental and biological. Can people be born as potential killers? Are people born as sociopaths? I have read that sociopaths can never have empathy for anyone but they can learn how to function by the rules of life. Wouldn't it be terrible to not have any kinds of feelins about anything?

Im the same way but people just fear what they don't understand... I like looking into their pasts and what reports show about people that are serial killers. If everyone had the same likes and interests what a boring world we would live in..

People will always find something to accuse the other of being "weird" or "scary" about. =/ I think it's normal for a person to find fascination with serial killers or anything considered not to be of the "norm." It's human nature in my opinion! Me personally, I don't get into serial killers but I know people who do. I don't see anything wrong with it.
