From The First Dance In Junior High....living My Life Through Music

After I went to my first dance in junior high (and loved it), I became addicted to music and dancing. A transistor radio became my most valued companion keeping me connected to the songs that told the story of my life. When I was home, spending time "in my room" listening to my rapidly growing vinyl collection (45 and 33 1/3 RPM) with Frankie Avalon, Bobby Darin, Paul Anka, Brenda Lee, Kathie Young....singing the words to my life story, bringing some sort of sense to the craziness of growing up. The immense sadness over a "break up" (which was really just a mis-communication) was eased by the songs by Ray Charles, Neil Sedaka and others.
My home life was chaotic with two younger brothers who always wanted to get into my stuff. I rarely chose to spend time with my family.
My mother said that she could always tell if I had a good or bad day at school by the music I'd play when I went into my room after school. My best girlfriend and I would walk for miles with our transistors playing, eventually leading past the street of "someone we liked." "On the street where you live" is a song that I could relate to.
When I moved to the Pacific NW in my sophomore year of high school, I was "the new girl from California". In the cafetorium was a juke box and I left my new friends just long enough to go over and put a dime in the jukebox, selecting a Beach Boys song that was popular in California but unbeknownst to me, never yet heard in the Pacific NW... "409" ....the flip side of "Little Surfer" I think. All the boys in the lunch room loved this "new song" and I became instantly known as cool and never spent another weekend night dateless.
Still today people are always amazed that I can tell them when a song was popular from the late 1950s through the mid 1990s. I lost interest in pop music when the balladeers came on the scene as I think of their music as just talking with a guitar in the background and I don't appreciate a lot of rap music that is so derogatory toward women. I am always shocked when a big SUV pulls up to a light next to me with a woman driving and rap blasting out!
