I Go Barefoot In Public
Before this event, I've noticed that when I was in retail stores that sold flip flops, customers interested in purchesing them would take off one shoe & sock just to see if thier feet and toes would fit in them. I became curious as to what would happen if I were to purchase flip flops, but would already be barefoot the moment I entered the retail store. I would wonder what kind of reaction I would get from employees and customers who would see me barefoot. A couple of years ago, I put my theory to test at two different retail stores -- only one of which I got the result I was looking for.
I entered the store without any shoes or socks on and asked the woman behind the checkout counter where the flip flops were. She pointed me towards the right isle. I browsed the different selections and found the ones that were my size (I even tried them on). As I came to the check out counter with the flip flops in my hand, the woman behind the counter glanced down and noticed my bare feet. I could tell that she was trying to contain her laughter. As soon as I got to the check out register, another customer came up, saw me barefoot with the flip flops in my hand, and started giggling. Amidst her giggles, she amusingly said, "Well, that's an interesting way of buying flip flops!" As I was paying for the purchase, the check out woman could tell that I did not need a bag.
Like I said before, I tried this experiment at two different retail stores, this one -- obviously -- gave me the result I was looking for. As far as the other retail store was concerned, no one else was in the store, and the young woman behind the cash register didn't even notice I was barefoot. This is, however, an experiment I would like to try again and see what (if any) kind of results I would get.
