Feelings were intensified when stories began filtering out of the maximum sentences being handed to first-time offenders of previously good character.
The message coming from Downing Street was clear: go hard on these offenders.
It made political sense for judges to start throwing the book at people they described as 'looters and rioters.'
Whilst most right-thinking individuals would concede that wrong-doing must be punished, the Coalition seems intent on using the courts to score cheap political points.
