Chances are best you just startled him and it was a reflex action (I find surprising skunks, and people screaming and panicking, are what cause most sprayings from the stories I've read).
Skunks usually run from humans on sight unless they're really young or live deep enough in the woods never to see people, in which case they're sometimes curious and might examine a human at a safe distance. But yeah the best thing to do if you do see a wild skunk is to just keep a respectful distance. If they (or any wildlife really) shamble toward you like a zombie though there's a good chance they have rabies or distemper, in which case, run.
Would love to read if your experience was similar to mine. Blinded at first. Gasping, dizzy, kind of nauseous. Slin oily burning, yellow-gold color. then a kind of unique sense of "presence". Like i was in an exclusive aura no one else could (or wanted!) to enter. How old were you? how did other people respond? Did your brother sympathize and discuss his own experience with you?
