Don't Be Scared!

Hi everyone! I had my first gum graft surgery two days ago (6-6-07). I had read some of the testimonials on this website beforehand, and I was very nervous going to my procedure because some folks out there have not had a good experience with this!

I had a graft done on two teeth (20 and 21). The periodontist and his staff were wonderful and really put me at ease. The procedure itself was completely painless, other than some discomfort when the novacaine was injected. I was in and out of there in under two hours.

It's been two days now and so far so good! (Knock on wood). I'm on a variety of medications, which I started taking 24 hours before the procedure. These include steroids, antibiotics, prescription ibuprofen, over the counter Tylenol, and a mouthrinse. There has been absolutely NO pain (although if I touch the outside of my cheek it is tender).

As far as food goes, the only restriction they gave me was to eat/drink nothing hot for the first 24 hours after the surgery. Also, I should try to chew with the other side of my mouth. I am not restricted to soft foods or anything like that.

The only side effects I've had are some swelling (not that noticeable) and some bleeding for the first day and a half. But so far this surgery really has been no big deal!

For those of you out there who, like me, read this site before your first procedure, I just want to say don't be scared! Of course there is always a chance that you'll have some complications, but there are plenty of people like me who have no trouble with the procedure. And in the end you'll have better dental health as a result! Good luck!
