I had a "free gingival graft"--meaning tissue was collected from my upper palate to graft onto the receded gums, but you probably already know that if you are reading these experiences--to repair 3 areas surrounding teeth on my lower mid/left portion of my mouth. One tooth, a canine, had severe recession due to an uninteresting gum injury, and partially to aggrevated brushing while having braces so many years ago. 2 teeth right next door were experiencing gum loss solely from brushing too hard with braces.
Anywho, on to the procedure.
Firstly, I had ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA what kind of ordeal this was gonna be. My dentist told me about my situation and referred me to a periodontist who basically diagnosed the whole thing and worked up a surgical outline for me. I didn't ask many questions, as I'm just the kinda guy who says "okay, okay...alright, sounds good." I didn't know how the procedure would be carried out, how long I'd experience pain and swelling, or what to expect during recovery.
So, I went through the surgery without being sedated (which I'd recommend to EVERYONE...I have a high threshold for pain, but this pushed my limits) and was only given Novacaine. The several shots of Novacaine put my mouth pretty well out for the entire length of the surgery...I didn't feel anything except the first few needles, the 2 palate shots, and then the occasional pressure from the doc working and pushing on my mouth.
I felt little pain throughout the procedure (hardly any, really), but felt like I got whallopped with a brick about 45 minutes after leaving the office. NOTE to everyone: get a friend or fam. member to drive you to and from the office, to the pharmacy and back home...don't even try to drive the first maybe second day after the surgery. Keep that gauze near...you'll need it. The wounds will naturally purge quite a bit of blood during the day of surgery and just a bit the day after. Take your meds and RINSE YOUR MOUTH. That's very important to keep the sites from becoming infected.
And a little crazy bit of info for you guys:
Some periodontists use putty to cover all the areas that were worked on. I myself had a huge chunk on the roof of my mouth, and I also had a big chunk of the putty squished around pretty much my entire lower teeth. This crap is really annoying, but try to just leave it be.
Something you might want to be on the lookout for...
I woke up in the middle of the night 2 and a half days after my surgery feeling bits of the putty from the roof of my mouth coming apart. Sure enough, before I knew it, the entire piece had fell out. Now for the good part. It left hanging a piece of tissue (or so I thought at the time) from the top of my mouth that smelled GOD-AWFUL and tasted like ABSOLUTE DEATH and looked just as revolting as those other descriptions. It kept bugging me and I kinda started freaking out because I didn't quite know what it was. So I woke up my periodontist at 3am to explain the situation, and he told me to gently rinse my mouth, and the tissue would probably disslodge. So I did that, and it finally shook loose. Little did I know that it was a monstrous blood clot that had formed in kinda a bowl-shape due to the fact that it was from blood that had collected on top of that putty crap. So, I got that out, rinsed like 33847 times, and I finally got to sleep.
I've been living on thick smoothies and shakes (Jamba Juice! Get the Peanut Butter Moo'd or Chocolate Moo'd for max calories and protein...you need both to stay satiated and to heal), and I will get the stitches out in about another week. Just hope I don't have another groutesque experience with the lower putty stuff that I will assume work its way off of my teeth and tissue.
After that, I should be smooth sailin' to a full recovery and a well-deserved filet mignon!!!!

Posted Jul 8th, 2008 at 3:11PM I had the surgery done on 5 different teeth March 2007. Unfortunately he made the mistake of using dissolving stitches in the roof of my mouth. Six days after the surgery I was half way through my shift at work. All of sudden I felt my mouth fill up with liquid, but it was filling up too fast to be saliva. I grabbed a paper towel asap and spit in it. Blood started gushing from my mouth everywhere. A student nurse in the store at the time came to my aide and took control of the situation. The ambulance came after a few min, but it felt like forever. The student nurse was worried that I was going to either choke on the blood or either go into shock. Once in the ambulance my vitals were taking. My heart rate consistently stayed in the 150s and I was sitting there calmly. Mind you someone my age should be in the 80s. Once to the hospital the periodontist came and evaluated things and just applied pressure to the roof of my mouth and gave me some bandages. When the doctor came in he told her I was fine and then told the registrar to admit and discharge me at the same time. By the time I left the back of the Emergency Room my family hadn't gotten there yet. When they arrived they found me covered in blood looking like I got in a bad fight (brusiing on my face had occurred from surgery). Things went okay that night and then the following night I was back in the ER same thing, but not as bad and then a few days later back in another ER from the bleeding. After those trips to the ER , my family physician and the periodontist. He finally decided to stitch me up with real stitches. I did an almost 180 in a matter of a few hours. To put it into perspective I was in the hospital 3 times in 5 days with no food and barely in liquids because the slightest motion in my mouth would cause the bleeding. The last time in the hospital the nurse had to try 3 different times to put an IV in me because my veins kept collapsing due to the fact I was dehydrated. The Periodontist kept trying to blame the bleeding on me by saying that I had a genetic blood disorder. He did no pre-op work on me, but I had my blood tested 2x in the hospital and once by my family physician. I have been in litigation for over a year and it's going no where. I even filed a complaint with the board dentistry and they said he did no wrong. What the periodontist told my grandfather the final time i was in office was that he "might have gotten close to a blood vessel", causing all of the trauma that I went through. If anyone has any litigation advice for me please share
Posted Aug 23rd, 2008 at 10:29AM, last updated Aug 23rd, 2008 at 10:37AM I've had the procedure done twice, for five different (lower front) teeth in total, and I've experienced no problems. The operation itself wasn't pleasant, but there really was no pain to speak of either the day of surgery or in the days after. I didn't fill the prescription for codeine either time, and I didn't even take ibuprofen after the second day. You *will* have to adjust your diet for a week or so, cutting your food into bite size pieces and chewing on one side of your mouth only. But it's a small inconvenience. Yes, I had dissolving stitches (no problems) and the putty that covers the site on the roof of your mouth and where the graft was placed. This putty really reduces irritation (and protects the wounds) so you should do what you can to keep it from getting dislodged. I should stress that I really liked and trusted my periodontist (she's fantastic), and I did research beforehand to find a good one.
Posted Mar 29th, 2009 at 6:33PM I am so nervous. Had a bad experience as a child. Dentist stuck a needle through the outside of my mouth, thru my gum and into my tongue. Needless to say, terrified of dentist. Now I have no lower for teeth now for 40 years. Have to have gum grafting all the way around lower jaw. Graft from top of my mouth to bottom. What can I expect? Can someone tell me the facts. The dentist just says it will be uncomfortable.
Posted Jul 15th, 2009 at 7:57PM I had Grafting done a week ago on my two front bottom teeth. Everything went well except part of the graft looked a little blue and i thought it was just bruising but then it started to look a little green and when i was rinsing my mouth part of it came off. Is that normal for a litle peice o come off? Is it normal for it to look blue or green? I'm kind of scared that it didn't heal right and part of it rotted off or something! Can someone help me?

Posted Jul 15th, 2009 at 8:08PM To iapisabel: I had my 8 lower teeth done on Friday, so about the same as you. I thought some of my tissue came off too, was in so much pain, so went in yesterday to have them take a look. In my case, it turns out it was the adhesive they use that came out, and not tissue. I guess it's common that people think it's a chunk of tissue but they assured me it wasn't. I haven't looked that closely at mine becuase it seems nasty to me, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was blue/green. From a quick glance, it looks more purple with white and generally looks just dirty and lumpy. the perio told me it looked "beautiful"! he gave me his cell phone # and said to call anytime. I would call your doctor and go in for a peek. If nothing else, it's piece of mind. My doctor also gave me some sleeping pills as I wasn't able to sleep (I'm a side/stomach sleeper which is impossible due to swelling and pain).
