That's what I would have screamed had I been able to.
You see, the day I scheduled the root canal ALSO happened to be the day the anesthesia machine was on the fritz. Normally, this might not be a big deal, but I have sensitive teeth, and that's not just a cute word. What it means is that even normal teeth CLEANING causes pain and is (literally) a giant headache throughout the day.
I stared at my dentist in shock as he told me the news. I wanted to run in terror from his house of pain, never to return. I bucked up, though, and since most of the tooth nerves were dead anyway, he told me there really shouldn't be a lot of pain even without the anesthesia....
He was wrong.
Not only could I feel the nerves of my teeth (which, apparently weren't QUITE as dead as the good doc had suggested), but they made a horrible, horrible noise with each painful movement of that hack's big mitts. A noise I may never forget. I vowed (as I coughed up blood and bits of tooth) that I'd get the hell out of there and find a new dentist as soon as I could stop crying like a little girl.
The moral of this story, boys and girls, is to never trust a smiling dentist whose numbing machine is on the fritz....

Posted Jul 24th, 2008 at 10:13AM, last updated Jul 24th, 2008 at 10:14AM I had my wisdom teeth extracted with only half-novocaine. He kept giving me novocaine shots and they kept not numbing me. He gave me six shots before he felt unsafe giving me any more (I felt unsafe getting any more). I told him, after the sixth, that it was numb (I couldn't afford paying for that visit and another if I had to come back later and try again--I have no health insurance), but it was really still only half-numb. My wisdom teeth were also impacted (still fused with the bone). It was... a really, terrible experience. So I empathize.
Posted Jul 24th, 2008 at 12:57PM Your "Dentist" should, ethically, have canceled the procedure and rescheduled it for a return visit ASAP. I guess it just shows that he's a hack who only works there for the money. If I were you, I would report him to the A.D.A. and maybe even the Better business bureau.
Posted Jul 24th, 2008 at 2:03PM yes please report that was illegal from what i understand what if this monster is doing that to children any good dentist would postpone more than likely the dr doestn want to spend the cash on anastesia or maybe doesnt even have a real liscence he could put somone in shock and kill them with those antics sorry for your horror please do what u can to make sure no one else has that happen

Posted Jul 24th, 2008 at 5:46PM well it is true all , or at least it happened to me when i was a child , i blocked out the pain but the terror the fear stays with me . when i was a child i had very bad teeth in pain constantly , i had one of many absessed teeth thru out my childhood and adult life . my mother finally got me into a dentist , the dentist told my mom because it was an absess i needed a root canal . as well as because of the absess , the anesthesia would not work , i was a child , i did not have a say , my mom told the dentist to do it , the fear still remains with me and i am 50 now
Posted Jul 24th, 2008 at 5:54PM, last updated Jul 24th, 2008 at 5:55PM As a physician I can tell you there is no such thing as a "numbing machine". In general a dentist would inject you with plain old Novocaine. If you are referring to nitrous oxide (N2O) or "laughing gas" as it is commonly known, there is no machine involved just a simple mask and a regulator. If your dentist did not have either one of these two basic things I would suggest that he may have lost his license to practice dentistry thus having his license for ordering Novocaine and nitrous oxide revoked. In either case this is a bad situation and can get someone put in jail for quite a long time.
