I used to be able to handle penicillin just fine.  I know I took it lots of times growing up and never had a problem.

Until my body decided to rebel.

I had a wound that got badly infected.  After a couple days in the hospital, Doc gave me the tried-and-true penicillin and sent me home.

I took the first dose the next scheduled.

My skin erupted.

In the span of a couple hours, I went from fine to one big hive.  They started at my throat and completely coated my torso, all the way to my groin.  The word itch doesn't begin to cover it.  Even when I tried not to scratch, I did it unconsciously.

I drew blood.

Hives that bad constitute the kind of serious allergic reaction that the doctors need to see.

So reluctantly, I headed back to the hospital.
