I had my computer looked at yesterday and I thought it was fixed, but now it is REALLY REALLY slow and I feel like throwing it out the window or taking an axe to it!!!
My son is my technician. It works out well because I can nag and whine at him when he's home from college until he gets it taken care of right. Maybe you will have someone you can nag and whine at someday ;-)
Chances are if you have a computer problem, someone else has had that same problem before you. A useful idea is to bookmark a good troubleshooting website such as smartcomputing.com to help you through the rough spots.
i too use norton and that thing has a mind of its own. when it starts optimising or any other such thing in the background then it slows the machine down. this has very little to do wit the internet speed.
also, windows does auto updates in the background.
open the task manager and click on the performance tab. you should find that the memory is run at >90% and you should also see that the drives light is almost constanly burning.
Has your browser cache been cleared? In XP, you go to "Tools" then "Clear Private Data." It's probably similar in Vista. Sometimes that can really slow things down and it is so simple it can be overlooked.
I gave up and got a Mac. It's not perfect, it freezes some times, but nothing serious that an unplug won't fix. I still trust it more than the Dell which crashed big time last year. I don't like though that, because of sudden growth, their customer service, in my opinion, stinks. The machine better perform, because getting to them is going to be every bit as frustrating as trying to get Dell. Not so HP, they are very helpful.
My computer does that too! Best fix for it is to back up every thing and do a total reload! Including reformatting your system hard drive. Just did mine couple weeks ago and it now flys.
It won't remove saved passwords unless you select that in the window. The only one you need to have checked is "cache" if you're afraid you'll lose important stuff.

lady tas
your computer is perfect. this is exactly what is meant to happen.
i believe that a computer tech is like a traffic cop. If you want to screw up the traffic, then place a traffic cop there.
hehehe.

I did that at first but then got my internet provider people to try and sort it out (as had other probs such as blank emails)
Since then had a computor consultant on the job
But it's all been over the phone
I guess I will have to take it into a shop

I have a vista laptop and Tiscali internet provider
I have spent the last hour just trying to write a story!!
The norton and windows thing has been a problem but I usually know when they are updating
The memory and power stuff was all checked and couple alterations made today .. by someone who knows what he is doing ( I think)
