She went through about 13 operations, and many of them were ground breaking. Never done before.
In Iowa City,Iowa she is in the book of medical records and teaching, as she was basically a Guinea pig.
She had to have skin grafts to rebuild her tongue, as they took half of it.
They took her voice box and she had to learn to talk all over again as well as eat.
I was young, probably about 10.....but I will never forget the smell of that oncology floor.
And when I was going through the scare of the possibility of me having a tumorous cancer in my cervix and had to go to that part of the hospital....I was flooded with those same smells, over come by the fears...and was reminded that I swore they would not cut me up like that.

Posted Apr 8th, 2008 at 2:23PM Marji, that smell....oh the smell. When I was going through cancer treatment I remember thinking, "I hope I don't smell like this place...like this illness." I know now I probally didn't but I remember the smell and the fear of it attaching to me. Crazy huh?
Posted Apr 8th, 2008 at 8:09PM It's the strangest thing....smell. How it does stay within your memory and somethings you can't quite place them...but others hit you like a stone upside your head ! I am sorry to my friends who this has brought the memory of a time in your lives where you thought it was the end. But hopefully this will also bring you pride in yourselves for persevering , and living for better times.
Posted Apr 8th, 2008 at 8:41PM Yeah, I revisited that smell long prior to my own scare as well. Jim's dad died from non Hodgkin's Lymphoma. And bless his heart he thought cancer was a form of punishment for being a bad person ! Even on his worse day I could not imagine him a bad person ! But there is tell that he was ran out of Alabama by his own family for his own protection...because he had killed a white man. He was born in 1915, so in his young years things were quite a bit more strained than they are now...especially in them thar back woods ! But still, that's what he believed !
