I Hate Facebook
The Paradox of Facebook: Does It Really Connect People?
I am a freak. I am not on Facebook. That’s right, I haven’t joined the masses, judge all you want. Blahblah. But, I do go on my sister’s Facebook to check on friends pictures etc. And here is what I gather from the entire Facebook experience. Facebook does not make you feel good about yourself, or “connect” you to people. Rather, I find the whole thing to just be a place for people to make you feel badly about yourself and to brag about how much better they are doing than you. Perhaps, I am overly sensitive here, but you never hear of people saying, boy I’m having a crap day or what have you. No.
It is copious amounts of vacation pictures. Pictures of vacations that are so much more glorious than ones you have ever been on, and certainly better than where you are currently sitting that day on your computer. On the flip side of those sunny palm tree laden photos, we have the “party pictures.” With these glitzed up happy drunk people shots, I’m left simply thinking, wow, I’m never having that much fun, and I certainly don’t look that good drunk.
It’s a paradox, this whole connecting you to Facebook. Even when you do connect to “old friends” whom you haven’t seen in years, how many times do you really engage in a catch up conversation? Most of the time, it’s just, connect, then stalk. You rifle through their photos, see if they got fat, who they married etc. But, do you really reignite the friendship? I’m sure there are exceptions to every rule, but in most cases I think it’s the latter.
I think there was a mass rush of my friends from high school to get married, simply so they could post that perfect “first dance wedding shot” as their profile picture. Now after some months, those pictures have graduated to sonogram black and white photos and then baby portraits. And what is with baby head bands? Your new born has no hair, why the head band? It is all a mystery to me. Sure, I think there can be some good things, but as a whole I’m left feeling it’s a competition to see who can make their life seem better online.
