You Can't Take Back A Bullet

I grew up with a lot of drug dealers and bikers where guns were commonplace. I never experienced guns ever fixing or solving any problem, only causing irrevocable damage, death, and worse problems ever escalating in a downward spiral of retaliation. I've seen friends kill friends in a drunken stupor over petty arguments. I've seen friends shoot their wives out of petty unwarranted jealousy. I've seen dope dealers shoot competitors over a few dollars. I've seen kids accidentally kill their siblings after finding their daddy's loaded weapon. No, I don't keep guns, too easy to use them. Years ago I switched to my fists or when necessary a baseball bat which can be lethal if you push me too far but will usually leave you only needing only a few stitches, not a casket. **** the guns, you can't take back a well placed bullet.

Saturday Night Special by Lynrd Skynrd:

Two feets they come a creepin'
Like a black cat do
And two bodies are layin' naked
Creeper think he got nothin' to lose
So he creeps into this house, yeah
And unlocks the door
And as a man's reaching for his trousers
Shoots him full of .38 holes

Mr.Saturday night special
Got a barrel that's blue and cold
Ain't no good for nothin'
But put a man six feet in a hole

Big Jim's been drinkin' whiskey
And playing poker on a losin' night
And pretty soon, Big Jim starts a thinkin'
Somebody been cheatin' and lyin'
So Big Jim commences to fightin'
I wouldn't tell you no lie
And Big Jim done pull his pistol
Shot his friend right between the eyes

Oooh Saturday night special...
For twenty dollars you can buy yourself one too...

Oooh let me tell you all about it...

Well hand guns are made for killin'
They ain't no good for nothin' else
And if you like to drink your whiskey
You might even shoot yourself
So why don't we dump 'em people
To the bottom of the sea
Before some ole fool come around here
Wanna shoot either you or me

Ooooh it's a Saturday night special
And I'd like to tell you what you can do with it too...

What's the point of the Lynrd SKynrd quote?

I own guns , my guns have never harmed anyone. But they have scared the living crap out of prowlers a couple of times.

Far more people have died or been maned at the hands of drunk drivers or other traffic accidents yet I don't hear you railing against cars. I wonder why that is, could it be because you own and use a car?

Those that beat their guns into plow shares will plow for those that don't!

Thank you amberdextrous, no other country in the world has so many guns per capita as the U.S.
The song Saturday Night Special by Lynrd Skynrd is the anthem for the evils of hand guns. People justify owning guns in the name of "self defense" yet more innocent children and women are killed by guns every year than home intruders, rapists, robbers, and murderers combined. The problem is that insecure people buy these weapons legally without realizing that you can take back an insult, rude gesture, or an unkind word, but a bullet is forever. That bullet not only hurts or kills their intended (or often unintended) victim, but also everyone else in that victims world. Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, children, extended family, and friends. Bad news with permanent results. Hand guns are almost always used offensively and rarely defensively.

Your statistics just aren't accurate. First off, Switzerland has more guns per capita than the US, and almost no gun crime. Barely any crime at all, in fact. Firearms account for only 0.8% of accidental deaths in the US, below cars, falls, poisonings, drownings, fires, and surgical complications, and "other land transportation," according to the National Vital Statistics Report. As far as homicides and assaults with firearms, you can't take back the blade of a knife, either. When the UK banned guns their gun crime went down, but their murder rate, especially knife crime, tripled. The gun isn't to blame, it's the person being negligent of their responsibility or downright murderous who is at fault.

Don't worry, neonshades, you won't need your baseball bat with me!

Yours is a very powerful personal story which strongly underlines many of the arguments against liberal gun laws. Violence begets violence, and if the weapons are available, some people will resort to using them.

Your story should be a well-placed bullet in the heart of the Gun Lobby, but there are way too many vested interests in the US making money from the tragedies you describe for your gun laws to be tightened enough to make much difference.
