I've never been to Australia, but everywhere that I've encountered them in other countries, they (and South Africans and New Zealanders) have been the rudest, most arrogant and most base "people" I've had the misfortune of meeting - ESPECIALLY the rugby types, who are loudmouthed thugs and cowards. In groups where they can gang up on people they act tough, but on their own, they're wallflowers.

Only one nationality has surpassed them for unpleasantness: Russians. But at least you won't find Russians offering to sell sex (adults or children), something some I saw SANZA rugby-types do in Thailand.

vsethbreding, it is so comforting to hear your story. I share many of the same views. My father in law thinks it's funny to tell me ****** and slave jokes. When I try to explain that slavery has a very deep and emotional meaning to American's and it's not something to joke about lightly I get laughed and brushed off. I also have been passed over for jobs that I was qualified for (several times). I live in QLD where the racism and loyality to only hiring other QLDers seems rampant. I think EthanJ's response is also very indicitive of 90% of the responses I get from other Australian's about my views on the country. They is little interest in hearing other views, and no willingness to hear anything negative about the country. I'm almost always told "you're taking things to seriously", "That's not the case at all", "that was just that one company", "only that one person was rude when they said 'no offense...but American's [insert rude comment here]."

I think that Australian's feel we don't have any sense of humor if there are truly some areas that we feel discriminated in - essentially, we're not entitled to an opinion that isn't their opinion.

I'm a white NYer who married an Australia. I stupidly agreed to move here without doing research or listening to the advice of others who warned of the 1950s mentality.

Another area that I struggle with is the whole "a man's man" gender roles. It's freakin' juvenile.

Sorry for my delayed response. I've been a little busy. The gender roles thing reminds me of my grandfather who is 92 years old, but a sentiment that seems to have been lost sometime in the 60's in America. I also see in the government them repeating things that failed in America or Europe which to me illustrates a total lack on the national scale to learn from others. The example which best describes this is the de-regulation of electricity companies in America in the 80's and 90's. I think that nepotism in Australia is universal. They only hire their own, and within that they prefer locals who's grandfathers they knew. It doesn't matter if you're more qualified. In fact being more qualified along with being foreign born to them means that you're going to be a tall poppy and try and tell them how to run their business. Ad for Australian humor I find it crude and without any real sense of witt. In fact Witt and sarcasm are almost seen as thinking you're better than them. I get told by people that I'm confusing their good nature, but I'm pretty sure that is not the case. I really do hope for a positive change in Australia. That they will start to be curious rather than just suspicious. In the interim I will just have to keep bonding with my fellow pilgrims in this strange land. I hope you're doing fine.

Can you elaborate a bit about the gender role thing please? Can you give some examples to explain what you mean ?

Classic European Christian ideals. The woman belongs at home, barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, the man has to be the bread winner, ect. I've actually gotten crap because my wife makes more money than I do. I think that this pattern is fast changing largely because of the increase in the cost of living. Australia also is at least twenty if not more years behind the USA when it comes to gender equality in the work place. I also do not approve of the way that men in general seem to be socially allowed to act toward women. Back home my balls would of been cut off if I tried one tenth of the things these guys easily get away with. It just all seems rather strange to me. Holding onto some of the worst qualities of the last century. Marginalizing any people, group, or gender can only serve to handicap a society, while integration and furthermore embracing cultures and people not your own leads to tremendous leaps and bounds in music, art, science, literature, and makes the society truly wealthy. Not just a society that claims to have plenty yet has little to show for it.

Blame the victim as always, lol. I don't think he noticed that I'm a brown person and never got the level of racism in America that I get here. The only state I really got any racism in America was in North Florida, the deep south. Also it was by the real white trash types. I'm not saying there is no racism in America, but it is certainly less socially acceptable, and far less in the open. You don't win an argument over if there are social injustices in Australia by saying "well your country has issues to" duh, but right now I do not live in the states. If I did and got this kinda crap I'd be complaining about America instead. Thankfully my ancestors and lots and lots of other smart people did alot of work decades ago to ensure that I could grow up in a better environment. It isn't perfect, but it's better than here and it keeps getting better, whilst aussies keep insisting there is no problem.

Are you letting Grans and Gramps determine what Australians think. Master race? That absurd, in fact the main group carrying on that thesus today is the KKK in.
I have never heard Australians refer to ourselves as the master race (except prior to WW2 when there was many political organisation in US and Australia fond of Hitlers Eugenics ideas. Its not a debatable topic, I have never heard it.

Also I do not believe your mother in law specified "Jews, the Africans, the Asians, eastern Europeans, Americans, and a few others, oh the Aboriginals"

Dude you know what like grumpy old republicans (tea partiers) from the state your wifes parents probably are racist idiots, it sounds like you let them get to your more then most would. ******** be ******** dude. Buddy on that you sure as an American you should be passing the racist judgement on Australia?

Trayvon, Blacks on average get much longer in jail, while being a smaller ethnic group they account for near 75% of the population. Thats institutionalized racism.

Also dude you just fundamentally don't like or get the Australian humor. Septictank (full of ****) is hilarious. Dude I am half American and compared to Aussies hell yea there full of ****. Not in a bad way its just totally different personalities. Americans back a winner a sure thing respect successful rich people, Australians will always back the underdog, If you talk yourself up they will think your a dickhead, they will be suspicious, we dont like the fat cats.

The Yankee thing does sound rude. I would love to hear how your wife deciphers all this,.

I don't believe you've spent much time in America Ethan, and if you have I doubt that you're well traveled. My in-laws are Victorian, and to be honest I do not know what political affiliations if any that they have. My wife actually told me about her mothers opinions of so called useless races. My wife also believes I've been mistreated and denied jobs I'm qualified for based on nationality. You have this highly biased, idealistic view of Australia. I had an idealistic view of Australia before I came here and it was more or less beat out of me. You really have no idea man. If you hadn't noticed in my earlier posts I'm racially mixed and I am not claiming that America or any nation is without fault. The difference is that Australia is still in this place where the majority of people seem to think that an issue doesn't exist. You can play it off in your own mind as just being because us foreign types don't get it, but realize that in most legal definitions discrimination, or harassment is in the eye of the beholder. If I dislike being called a sepo and I tell you I dislike it and you keep saying it, then it becomes harassment. So no I won't just accept that kind of stuff from randoms. Do not think that I am "up myself" because with friends we trade well meaning insults all the time, but calling Americans sepos, or Muslims ragheads (by anyone, Americans, Australians, ect) is really unacceptable. Don't try to explain how Aussies see it and how I need to change. You're welcome to disagree, and I'm welcome to think you're just another arse backward bogan mentally stuck in 1972 patting himself on the back congratulating himself on how wonderful it is to be a fvcktard.
