I hope that you've managed to find a better place by now. I can only imagine that you ended up in Sydney - a horrible place despite it's international image.
I'm an Australian who's tried to make a go of Sydney for the last couple of years but I have to admit your description is apt. Over priced, unfriendly and basically a waste of time. Jobs for mates and everyone else be damned.
I'm leaving also - enough is enough.
    Good luck to you

Did Aus make you insane ? How is NZ ? Is it a different ambience ? Yes, I will be leaving. Without a doubt before the end of 2013. I have started selling everything. :)

They still have bogans, and even worse, they have bogan gangs there, take a look at the figures of how many NZ young people are leaving in droves.

I have never been able to work out why it feels this way. Maybe because it started out as a penal colony and therefore there were the rulers and the ruled. The resentful timid but angry prisoners and the bullying guards. Maybe it all grew from there. In the 1970s we saw the introduction of the seatbelt laws - good on the surface and seemingly a benefit to society, but when you accept that it is someone else's right to make decisions for you and you only have to follow the rules ............. maybe that leads to a place like this where every thing you do is regulated and defined by some authority. you loose something of what it means to be human when you cannot take responsibility for your own decisions..........................................

this country is a police state, aussies are apathetic, they have no passion about this country....... laws are passed and aussies just dont care..... there is no freedom here, it is a lie ... this place is expensive and conservative .....over controlled and lacks passion.....maybe it does stem from the colony and white guilt .....

When we were applying for emigration I felt positive and full of hope. I had no negative ideas about Australia at all. I was looking forward to all the good things I imagined we would find and enjoy and I was looking forward to being part of this society. But once we got here, it didn't take long for that "feel good" factor to evaporate. Not long at all. I would suggest to any person considering moving to Australia, that they take an extended visit first. But during this visit, remember not to confuse their superficial "friendliness" ( while they are taking money from you ) with genuine humanity and warmth. Try to strike up a meaningful conversation. Try to find out how someone actually FEELS about something. See if you can make people laugh WITH you in a genuine sense rather than AT someone or something.

I felt exactly the same, we were ripped off, never made an ozzie friend, when I complained to my husband, he said I was not trying enough, well do I need to try this hard. We left and I have never looked back. I will never return...but you are right clicky, jobs for them..regardless of your experience...humourless, shallow, backstabbers..before I moved there I had no reason to hate them...I do now.

So many people report similar experiences of their time in Oz. If you are thinking of emigrating to this country, read what is written in this forum. I used to think it was only me who felt this way. Not any more, not since I found this forum. I now know there is nothing wrong with me. I am simply incompatible with a place that is full of deceit, cynicism and superficiality. Tell everyone you know. It is also interesting that this forum exists. There is nothing else of a similar vein, regarding any other country.
