Still Stuck In Suck City

I hate my job as much as ever, but I'm beginning to hate searching for a new job even more. I've applied for about 10 jobs over the past year, got called in for an initial interview 4 times, got called back for a second interview only twice. I am 56 years old, soon to turn 57, and I know my age is working against me. After all, if you had two good candidates and one was 10 or 20 years younger, wouldn't you hire the younger one? It's not discrimination, it's just common sense.

Meanwhile I am terrified that I am going to be stuck in my suck job forever (which is about as long as I'll have to keep working because I'll never be able to afford retirement.) I wish I had done something completely different in my life so I wouldn't be in this fix, but I don't know what I could have done. I envy people who are not facing this dilemma.
