I Hate Paradigms
Okay it's obvious that I don't like paradigms.
Shortly after my injury I was told of all that I could not do. You won't ever stand or walk. You can't do the things you used to do and on an on.
Well they were wrong !
Much to my doctors surprise after my first year in rehab I coud stand with a walker. It wasn't long before that I could walk short distances with a cane.
That's where the problems started.
I'm a "Walkie", I'm one of the lucky ones. I still use my chair when the legs are beat but most of the time my I use a Segway as my main mobility device.
Little did I know that would lead my down a path I never thought I would take.
My use of the Segway became an issue in some places so I needed to do something.
Myself and a small group started 5 years ago to " Break the Paradigm " of what a mobility device is.
We decided early on that the only true change would have to come from the top, the United States Department of Justice. We hate litigation we prefer education and that's what we did.
The end result was the a new rule change in the ADA that specifically states that the Segway falls under it's protection . That made some very happy and others very unhappy .
To my surprise some in the disabled community were not happy. I have a thousand thoughts as to why but the main reason is that they as well as most of the world are stuck in the idea that if you have a mobility disability then you use a wheelchair .
Well the times they are a changing.
One wall is broken but another is always ahead.
Tell me your story, tell me what you can do.
It's your life , take charge and move forward no matter what others tell you.
Nothing is to trivial, tell me what you do that breaks "The Paradigm" !
