I Hate Racism and Discrimination
i have seen the racist/sexist/discrimination from both sides.
i am white, male and i grew up in a white culture. in a redneck white culture, i should say.
it never appealed to me, and being born a sensitive artistic soul, it is just my nature to stick up for someone being slandered and set upon by such sickness.
my ideals led me to europe, where i tried to become a bohemian novelist ex-pat sipping brandy alexanders in funky little cafe's.
europe is a bit more sensitive to the racist bent, but it was still predominantly white.
so i moved to capetown, south africa.
people ask me what africa was like (i ended up living and volunteering there for over 3 years) and all i can say is africa is like anywhere over here, but with everything you know, have learned, are taught, and take for granted turned COMPLETELY opposite.
like, a mirror opposite.
what really hurts me is the muslim bashing that is going on here right now.
africa has a huge population of muslim people (called colored there), as did the south pacific (i lived in suva, fiji after africa) and i will say they are the kindest people i have ever met.
i was walking by my neighbour's house, and they were doing a shnook (baracuda) fry...now, this is africa, where we live behind razorwire and jagged fences, so i didn't know them at all.
the father of the household saw me walking by, and peeking into the yard, and rushed to the gate to meet me passing.
i was invited in, and had an amazing, amazing experience. the kindness this unknown white foreigner was shown, and the meal i was offered made me realize that would never, ever happen here, where all my neighbors have more than enough.
have you ever invited a stranger to a meal? not a starving person, but just some random person?
a minority?
i never had, but i will say, i learned how to do it.
so, the next time you read a story about some `wicked muslim', take it with a grain of salt.
i WISH my society (north america) opperated with such kindness.
and it was not an isloated incident, or a fluke.
it is a way of living a good, decent life.
