Racism and America

Illegal immigration and racism are problems that many countries face around the world.  For example people from Haiti cross the border illegally to try to find work in the Dominican Republic and are victims of racism there.  People from the Dominican Republic come illegally to Puerto Rico to find the jobs that puertoricans don't want to do and they are subject to racism too.  Puertoricans goes to the U.S. and they will be subject to the same.

I you have the opportunity to watch a soap opera from any Latin American country including Puerto Rico you will not find people of Indian or African  descent not even mulatto's in starring roles they will only fill the roles of a driver, domestic service or poor people. What I trying to say with this is that we Latin Americans not only suffer from racism but we are racist too.

Racism is alive and well everywhere.  United States is the most known and talk about case by being the most powerful nation in the world.  Sadly the Nation has never been fully integrated.  Some argue that the U.S. will lose its identity caused by wave after wave of legal and Illegal immigrants, others believe that the country is invaded as a part of a conspiracy by the Mexican government to take back what they lost in 1848.  Now there is another conspiracy that the Mexicans were used as a part of a terrorist plot to destroy the U.S. with the Swine Flu and the list of conspiracies and hypothesis goes on and on.

What if those crossing the borders were Caucasians would they be subject to the same persecution I think not.  If the United States does not want to go down in flames, instead of segregate they must integrate those that come legally to the U.S. Some say the American culture will be lost but what is the American Culture if not a mix of different traditions brought by the very immigrants that came to the nation.  Some say that English must be the official language of the nation because the immigrants speak other languages.  That is right only in part the first generation will maintain it native tongue and traditions the second generation will mostly speak the language of the nation they are living in and begin to acquire its culture by the third they are only known perhaps by the color of the skin or their last names.  That transition must be encouraged by integrating not segregating in ghettos by education and by our moral values. Aren’t we all equal under the eyes of God?

Those who believe in racism have the rights too, we don’t live in Nazi Germany.  The United States value the Freedom of Speech and they have the right to believe and express whatever they think is correct.

The American People have two paths

1.         To leave racism and xenophobia behind and integrate the people who come legally into the U.S. and enrich the American Culture with their traditions.

2          Or fall into a Civil War that will destroy the Nation as we know it.

A final note we have to remember that we all came here as invaders in the late 15th century that we took their lands and destroyed innumerable cultures and commit genocide in a scale only compared with the Holocaust.

I wrote this after reading a news article about the backlash Mexicans are suffering due to Illegal immigration and the Swine Flu.
