I would have thought better of them.....but no .....from Hillary Clinton to Kevin Rudd (ex Aussie prime minister) .
One of the best orators was ....like him or not ...was Winston Churchill ..not an "um'" or "err" to be heard!
Really it's not that hard ....just stop,,,,,people do not realize the power of the pause ...it gives you time to digest what the speaker is saying.
Otherwise it is just verbal flautuence

You make a good point. Leaving a pause in there would sound better than saying um a bunch of times. I'll have to remember this if I ever have to give a speech, which I hopefully won't have to. I'm really nervous about speaking in front of other people. I would probably be so nervous that all you would hear would be ums!
