I Have a Child With Autism
I am getting really tired of filling out forms. As if it's not hard enough the first time to think though the why, how and when of why your child is battling basic life functions that other people take for granted. But no, at each and every place you go to, you have to tell them all over again. The questions go along the lines of:
Is your child agressive? Have they had a hearing test? a vision test? Do they have mood related issues? How do they interact with you? other people? other children? children their own age? how do they communicate their needs to you? were there any pregnancy/ birth related complication? are there any major issues within the family? do they dress themselves? are they toilet trained? do they seem to have any sensory issues such as reacting negatively to noises that others dont mind?
*sigh*
Every round of these papers, I re-visit the forms several times. The first time I fill out the stuff that's easy: name, date of birth, gender, address, mother and father's names.... Anything else that doesn't cause me too much grief. Then I put them away. As time passes, and I realise I'll have to get the forms in soon, I revist them, and try to get through more: the questions that cause me personal pain, but I can logically answer. I just shut off and do it. Then there comes the harder stuff. Nobody is static, definitely not my son - he does things sometimes and not others. Some things I have to think hard about before answering, because am I telling the truth? Then, pretty much when there is no more time, I'll fill out the toughest of them all: do you mind us videoing your child? can we share information with XYZ?
Do these people know how hard this all is? Couldnt we fill these things out once, and just give permission to each organisation or therapist to access the database?
