I Have a Family Member With Schizophrenia
about my life. basically my mother was a paranoid schizophrenic and my sister a schizo-affective.
Sheila.. She was a mother, my mother, a daughter, sister, granddaughter, wife, and friend. I never lived with her. I have only 1 memory of her. maybe to some people that means that its not hard for me since i didn't know her well. but every mother and daughter have a natural bond no matter what. My grandmother raised me. ever since i was born.
My mother was diagnosed as Schizophrenic at the age of 13. She did drugs with a boyfriend and it brought out the mental disorder earlier in life.. which was likely to happen anyway. which i learned in a abnormal psychology class i took in college. you can tell how sick she was in pictures she had for school photos. one year she was tan and smiling! the next, pale and had a dead look in her eyes. my grandmother is the most amazing woman in the world. she is strong. she took care of my mother the best she could.
on August 18th, 1999 my life was changed forever. i remember getting the phone call. my grandmother answered the phone and my grandfather was on the other line.. "sheila is dead" he told her. which i dont know why anyone would say it so bluntly.. but hey.. thats how he told her. she screamed. i never learned how she was murdered til i was 18.
my mother was sweet and naive. He went to her to hang out and drink some beers, she said yes. He showed her where he worked and tried to make a move on her. In the past she MAY have been sexually abused. she freaked out and started to have a mental break down and see and hear things. he was drinking and started to freak out. she tried to run away. he TACKLED HER DOWN TO THE GROUND. she screamed. he grabbed a fishing knife he had in his boot and in a rage started stabbing away. slashing away at her face arms hands chest. at this point he hadn't hit any main organs and could of taken her to the hospital and she would of been saved. but he decided to end her misery. he got behind her.. pulled her head back.. and cut her throat. cut her throat to the point of nearly severing off her head from her body..
my sister could not handle the pain. she had a mental breakdown and was diagnosed as schizo-affective at the age of 13.
in my life i have had to help my grandma with my sister. every now and then she has an episode.
a couple years back she tried to run out of the house while she was having an episode. she is around 185lbs and i was around 90lbs at the time. i tackled her to a chair and held her down with all my strength until the cops came to take her to a mental health facility. the next day i went to prom with the backs of my calves bruised
i miss my mother more and more every day.
i will continue to fight in her honor to keep her murderer locked in prison. i promise her that.
