They Are Determined To Go The Most Painful Route

I am kind of at a loss for what to do. I have a friend who has always told me how important it is to love yourself. Making good decisions was key to that, and so is avoiding situations that will do me harm.He has warned me about people he thought might not be straight forward with me and when I am around someone that takes me on too many ups and downs he says to get away from them. Thats because he really cares about me.Now he's the one who is doing everything that he warned me against doing. And worst of all he isn't listening ,At least I do listen when he warns me.But I warned him when he began this last mess and hes chest deep in now.I am so afraid I won't be able to pull him free and he's been up to his neck in this hole before He knows it's a bottomless pit.How can I stop him? I can't watch him drown and do nothing. It;s breaking my heart that I can't help him like he has helped me in the past.I even basically threatened to toss aside everything hes taught me and do something really out there and he didn't flinch. What am I going to do.

Sometimes the only thing you *can* do is be there to listen...without offering judgement or advice. It sounds like this friend has a lot going on, and that he's heading for a crash.

Hard as it is, you may have to let him. If you've given him all the good advice, if you've done everything you can...take a step back and let him crash.
I know this is hard. I've had to do it. It hurts like a SOB. But sometimes it's all you can do for someone you love.
I hope everything resolves itself for you both.
