One of my heroes died last week, aged 97. He was heroically kind, heroically humble, heroically compassionate. Maybe not the usual virtues we associate with heroes, but they are virtues I value and he had them in spades.
My father was my first hero, for his humor, his intelligence, his tenderness, and his integrity.
I have many mothering heroes, women who remind me by their everyday actions what mothering is about, who make me want to be a better mother to my children.
None of my heroes would consider themselves heroes...No true hero would.
