I was a mobile therapist part time after I got my masters in Psych. I found parts of it to be frustrating because of having to serve so many masters....the endowment, the agency, the parents, and the poor child who needed the help. I found the sessions lasted beyond the optimal level and often deteriorated into play. I'd like to get your cut on some of that. I never really talked to other MTs. I loved the kids, and unfortunately they loved me, so we had problems with closure. I worked mostly with Aspergers clients but also did a lot of testing. Since I also have a physics degree, people always dumped testing on me. But that's my favorite part anyway. I'd love to hear some of what you have to share....anything!

I have a MSW myself and have worked with the severely mentally ill and MISA for many years. I am currently working with a hospital based program to help folks get through withdrawal from Opioids or alcohol but what I really need to do is get off my *** and get my LCSW. I'm not sure if I would ever feel comfortable working with child services due to being a product of that system, too close to home, I guess.

I must admit as a man a MSW in T&A could be fun and I know that a great deal of research would be needed, and I guess I would just have to bite the bullet and do my part... oh yah, D&A, drugs and alcohol!

The bike group i belong to has a chairity ride every year called CHRISTMAS for KIDS and along with another biker group we raise money for three differiant chairties and one is a home for emotional disturbed children. We ride out there every year in december and give them a check and the kids love it!! It's a happy time but sad also!

A little of both. I see a lot of schools not wanting to follow their Individualized Education Plan which is made to set up accommodations to ensure they receive a good fair education.

Have they fallen through the cracks or been forced to mainstream against their best interests. Before my wife retired she routinely had children in her classes (7th grade) who were functionally illiterate and innumerate, violent, unable to control their bodily functions, etc., but because of the law they had to be in general classes instead of getting special help.

Very much so. I work in schools occasionally and hear about that a lot from teachers. I have worked with lots of kids who have fallen through the cracks. Drives me nuts.

A great profession that gives so much to the world. Do you find you have problems with the current state of education in the US, the "no child left behind" concept, etc., in which children who really need help are mainstreamed whether they are capable or not?

I think it is great that you go to the homes to provide therapy. It is important to go where people live and work and go to school to understand where they are coming from versus the abstract neutrality of an office which can appear cold and clinical to clients. And Congrats on your degree. I am on the last year of my MSW. I have made stabs at a masters before and will be so happy when I have accomplished this. It is a bucket list thing and something which holds significance in my life.

kool, I'm on the last two courses of my MBA, from there I'll be completing a cap stone course that along with my thesis will qualify me for my EMBA. I can't wait to complete it.

    Thanks for sharing, loralei.

Does going to people's homes put you under psychological pressure or did you learn to distance yourself from the pain of others? (I am just hypothesizing).

Seeing people in misery made me stop working on documentary films and go to fiction instead. I just couldn't take the reality anymore honestly.

All to say, I salute you big time! Hats off.
