I Have a Mother Who Has Alzheimer's Disease
Proud, active and independent
Always described my mother
Determined to live her life
Never depending on another
My mother was always particular about
Her looks, age, and appearance
Enjoying the love of several men
Sharing years of passion and romance
Her mental status is changing
Words come out jumbled and unclear
She forgets the names of loved ones
To forget me is something I fear
My heart is breaking
Trying to make her understand
The desire for independence
Now, an unreasonable demand
My Mother's eye sight is failing
Her world, now hard to see
It’s difficult to comprehend
My mother’s dependence on me
My tears come easily
As my mother slips away
I must enjoy each moment
Cherishing my mother each day
God please be merciful
When my mother’s life is through
Send loved ones to greet her
Guiding her safely home to you
