What Little I Remember From My One Acid Trip

Muffin got me thinking....

I was about 18. I had one friend that I hung out with, S****. We were usually kicking around a hackysack. He was very outgoing and had a magnetic personality. He always wanted to go here and there, see this one and that one. He knew everyone and everyone knew him. I was just the 'other one'.

One day we decided to go to the next town over to see some friends he had there. I liked going to that town. It was more suburban and all the young people were headbangers. Everybody seemed to have a band. 75 cents for the bus and off we went.

We got there and started walking. I think we went to someone's house, maybe they were home, maybe not. We walked around some more and made our way to another house. I can't remember the guys name, but I remember he looked kind of like Garth from Wayne's World.

We went in, leaving our shoes outside the door. His mother had a Persian cat with very nice, long hair. He said his mother would kill him if the cat rubbed up against our shoes and got dirty. So we sat at the kitchen table, the three of us in our socks.

We talked about whatever. Music mainly. The guy was telling us about this new band that we just had to hear, Jane's Addiction. Or maybe ***** For Pyros. Whichever, it's the same damn band anyway.

We were getting ready to leave when he mentioned he had some acid for sale. Only $3 a hit and did we want any. I had no money but S**** had about enough for two. I had never done acid before and didn't know what to expect.

They handed me a little piece of paper. I didn't see anything on it. I didn't know what I'd be looking for anyway. I placed it on my tongue and felt a tingle. Something was definitely on the paper and it was now working it's way onto my tongue. A minute later we were leaving the house.

S**** suggested we go to the mall and people watch. Sure, why not? I didn't have any better ideas. We trekked our way to the mall. By the time we got there the acid was kicking in. I recall being at the mall, sitting in the pavilion area. There was a raised brick area housing some trees by the food court. I remember sitting on the little brick wall. The only other thing I remember about being at the mall was wondering why people were looking at me. I was trying to be still so they couldn't see me, but it felt like everyone was either looking at me, had been looking at me or was about to look at me. And everything was in slow motion.

I have no idea how long we were there. We decided to walk home. We crossed the vast parking lot and cut through a wooded area. The next part I remember was walking down the highway. We were crossing an overpass. I was walking with my head down, arms slightly out to the sides as though I were walking a tightrope, watching every step I took. S****  was babbling on about something. I wasn't really listening. I was more interested in my steps.

I mentioned to him this odd sensation I was having. I explained I could see the ground ahead, which was flat. I went on to explain I was measuring in my head every time I lifted my foot, yet it seemed to take longer to put the foot back down. I felt like the Earth was moving away from me. I thought, at the time, that his response was brilliant.

He told me that we were walking in perfect time to the rotation of the Earth and that is why it felt like it was moving away from us, because it was. We walked for awhile, I don't know how long, trying to figure out if we were time traveling. We thought that we weren't moving, but that the world was moving under us, therefore time should be frozen and we'd arrive back home without losing time.

You might have some messed up thoughts on acid, but they are really great messed up thoughts. We started coming down a little.

I remember it was getting darker. We were almost home, just a few more streets to cross. We were getting ready to cross a street that just angled off the one we were on. I looked behind me for traffic. I saw a car off in the distance. I paused, thinking I should wait, then decided to go. I took off in a full run. I heard a very loud screeching and a horn that sounded as though it was right at my ear. I turned my head to the left, never slowing my pace. I saw nothing but white light. A few seconds later I was on the other side of the road, waiting for S****.

He told me all he could imagine was me seeing the lights and freezing like a deer. He said if I had then I would have been nailed by the car. He had never seen anyone run out in front of a car that close before. I made it home and sat in my chair in front of the TV. I still felt a little off. I was getting tired, too.

That was the only time I have done acid. I'll never forget walking in time with the Earth. That felt great.
