That's How Things Are Done Around Here

Ever asked yourself why we continue to do what we are doing if there is a different way out there?
A group of scientists placed 5 monkeys in a cage and in the middle, a ladder with bananas on the top. Every time a monkey went up the ladder, the scientists soaked the rest of the monkeys with cold water. After a while, every time a monkey went up the ladder, the others beat up the one on the ladder. After some time no monkey dare to go up the ladder regardless of the temptation.
Scientist then decided to substitute one of the monkeys. The first thing new monkey did was to go up the ladder. Immediately the other monkeys beat him up.  After several beatings the new member learned not to climb up the ladder, even though never knew why. A second monkey was substituted and the same occurred. The first monkey participated on the beating for the second monkey. A 3rd monkey was changed and the same was repeated (beating). The 4th monkey was substituted and the beating was repeated and finally the 5th monkey was replaced.
What was left was a group of 5 monkeys that even though never received a cold shower, continued to beat up any monkey who attempted to climb the ladder.
If it was possible to ask the monkeys why they would beat up all those who attempted to go up the ladder....Probably the answer would be: 'I don't know-that's  how things are done around here.'
Does it sounds familiar?

Oh yes, sounds very familiar

The definition of insanity ... Keep doing the same thing over expecting a different outcome... It's so true..

That is so true with people entering a new work force,we don't know why it has to be done that way,it just does.I get myself in the **** a bit because I don't like to follow blindly. Why is the question,if you don't have a proper answer I will rock the boat.

I love studies like this, thanks for sharing. I instantly you apply this story to our society...essentially in many ways, we are similar to caged animals. It makes me wonder about the purpose of the study.

Sounds like the millitary

That's the truth right there -.- Why everyone thinks 'tradition' is so important, I don't know lol. I bet I participate in a million pointless traditions everyday, without even noticing... creepy o.o

traa BOM BOM hehehe joke joke

Sounds just like where I work. I still get the banana though, no matter how many times I get beat up. ****** the lot of 'em off.

yes,,sounds familiar

If you're getting your @ssed kicked repeatedly, I suppose anyone would stop climbing the damn ladder, lol ^_^

i enjoyed this story. we all have accepted things without question because that is how they have always been and will always will be.

And that brings us to USA 2012.

That is so cool :)
