I have been living in the USA for over 10 years and still I get a lot of attention with regards to my accent. It has not really been beneficial to me as I feel myself getting embarrassed to the point where I do not really want to speak too too much.

The other day my husband and I went to a vegetable stand and I was speaking to him.

A man there about my husband's age put all the vegetables down that he had in his hands and proceeded to stare at me.

Thanks for your reply baldkate. I tried to disguise my accent, but like you mentioned, you never really lose it. I sound so incredibly silly when trying to mimic to an American accent, lol, to the point that I stopped. Although I will admit that I try occasinally when in funny/quirky mode...Again, thank you for your reply. Much appreciated....

Baldkate... Do you get a lot of attention in regards to your accent? And if so, does it make you feel uncomfortable, or do you just take it all in stride? BTW, Thank you for your comment....

Abooklover. I just love your comment... It really made me smile " He could be telling them off and they wouldn't even care." lol that is funny, and a plus, since he can get free stuff.

Thank you both for your comments... Much appreciated...
